Batie-Gaddy, Swank joining KCC basketball

Myzeah Batie-Gaddy and Austin Swank, who helped Iowa City West win two straight Class 4A state basketball titles, have signed letters-of-intent to continue their careers at Kirkwood Community College.

They are part of a 10-man class that includes Matt Lassen from Linn-Mar and Joe Weeks from Solon High School.

Kenny Ejim, the younger brother of Iowa State star Melvin Ejim, also will be joining the Eagles.

New Kirkwood Coach Bryan Petersen is excited about his first class.

McDermott gives Petersen strong endorsement

Bryan Petersen is only 25 years old, just a few years older than the players he'll be leading next season as the interim head coach of the Kirkwood men's basketball team, but Creighton Coach Greg McDermott is confident he'll do a good job.

Petersen played and worked for McDermott at Iowa State, where he was a two-year starter at point guard during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns. He spent a season on McDermott's staff as a graduate assistant before spending two more years on the ISU staff when Fred Hoiberg succeeded McDermott as head coach.

"When we recruited him and he played for us, it was obvious that he was a coach on the floor," said McDermott. "His basketball I.Q. was off the chart.

"That was evident as a player. He was able to carry that over to his coaching career."

Final 4 has strong Kirkwood flavor

Kirkwood Community College has a catchy advertising slogan that says you can "Start Here, Go Anywhere."

That includes the Final 4 of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Chris Jans and Greg Heiar, two assistant coaches at Wichita State, have a strong connection to the Kirkwood Eagles.

Wagemester steps aside as Kirkwood coach

Doug Wagemester, one of the most intense and most successful junior college men's basketball coaches in the country, has decided to step aside as the head coach at Kirkwood Community College for the 2013-14 campaign.

Wagemester, 45, wants to concentrate on his job as Kirkwood's athletic director and also spend more time with his wife and three children.

Bryan Petersen, 25, a former Kirkwood player and one of Wagemester's assistant coaches this past season, has been named interim head coach for the 2013-14 season.

Semler, Heffernan make top all-region team

Kirkwood Community College sophomores Kasey Semler and Gage Heffernan have been named first team All-Region in Division II junior college basketball.

Taylor Olson of Kirkwood was named second team All-Region. Devan Douglas and J.C. Fuller from Kirkwood were named third team All-Region.

Olson also was named to the Region XI all-tournament team.
