Kirkwood men ousted by Ellsworth, 70-65

The Kirkwood men's basketball team ran out of patches and bandaids Friday night.

The Eagles darn near ran out of players, too.

It was that kind of a season for Kirkwood, filled with injuries and player defections, but the Eagles went down fighting as best they could.

Kirkwood lost to Ellsworth, 70-65, in the regional semifinals Friday night at Johnson Hall to finish a topsy-turvy season with a 19-13 record.

Semler's hot streak stopped by torn ACL

Kasey Semler was enjoying one of the best games of his life last Saturday for the Kirkwood Eagles against DMACC.

He had scored a career-high 27 points and the Eagles were a few minutes away from securing a 96-86 victory when he felt a sharp pain in his left knee.

"It gave out," he said Wednesday night. "It popped."

That popping sound was the ACL in his knee.

Kirkwood's 'Fab 9' top NIACC in OT

Their roster keeps shrinking, but the Kirkwood men's basketball team keeps battling and plugging away.

The Eagles did it in grand style Wednesday night.

Kirkwood outlasted NIACC in overtime, 89-83, in the opening round of the Region XI tournament at Johnson Hall with Kasey Semler sitting on the bench with a torn ACL.

Semler is Kirkwood's leading scorer and top 3-point artist, but the Eagles found a way to outslug NIACC without him in a highly entertaining ballgame.

Eagles clinch home date with forfeit

The Kirkwood men's basketball team clinched a first-round home game in next week's conference tournament without even bouncing a ball Wednesday.

The Eagles (17-12, 8-5) received a forfeit from Southwestern Community College (14-14, 6-7).

The game was to be the nightcap of a women/men doubleheader between the schools. The women's game will be played as scheduled at 5:30 p.m.

The "win" clinched a first-round conference tournament home date for the Eagles next Tuesday against an opponent to be determined. Kirkwood is in third place in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, and still has a shot at finishing second.
