Feisty Kirkwood men knock off DMACC

Kirkwood guard Kasey Semler left Johnson Hall with a sore hand, sore toe, sore groin and a smile Thursday night.

"I'll go get some ice in a minute," he said dismissively, gladly trading a few aches and pains for a key victory.

Semler contributed 10 points, six assists and the right attitude as the Eagles defeated DMACC, 74-60, in an ICCAC conference game.

Hunter, Manego spark Kirkwood men

The Kirkwood men's basketball team has a little ritual in the locker room after games.

Once the coaches are done talking, the players are given a chance to say something about the team. Wednesday night, sophomore Devan Douglas wanted to say a few words about the way Kevin Hunter and Sean Manego played against Iowa Central.

"He just wanted to congratulate us, to keep our confidence up," said Manego, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Cape Coral, Fla.

Hunter muscled in 14 points and Manego canned 11 to help the Eagles dispense with Iowa Central, 68-57, in an ICCAC game at Johnson Hall.

Wagemester nets 400th win at Kirkwood

Doug Wagemester always figured he'd be a high school teacher and coach. That was the career path he envisioned for himself when he was growing up in Clinton.

"I loved my high school coaches and admired those guys," he said Saturday afternoon.

Instead of coaching high school basketball, Wagemester's life took a twist after he graduated from Loras College in 1990. He began his career as an assistant coach at the collegiate level and has stayed with it ever since.

Wagemester, 44, has been eminently successful as the head coach at Kirkwood Community College and collected his 400th victory in 15 years Saturday when the Eagles clipped Clinton Community College, 75-52, at Johnson Hall.
