CEDAR FALLS - Cedar Falls could not capitalize on Cedar Rapids Prairie miscues in the first half Friday night, which was half the story.
In the second half, Prairie's powerful running created enough room for the Hawks to taste success with a 10-7 victory at the UNI-Dome.
Cedar Falls (4-2, 2-2) scored zero points off four first-half turnovers from Prairie (3-3, 2-1). Meanwhile, the Tigers' lone giveaway turned into the winning score for the Hawks late in the third quarter.
Mitch Christensen shouldered a load for Prairie that featured 33 carries for 161 yards, including a key fourth-and-2 conversion with about three minutes left.
Cedar Falls’ lone score was a 74-yard pass from Trey Hansen to Kyle Boomgarden. The paltry total came just one week after the offense put up 56 points in a win over Linn-Mar.
“Jeff Kean is our defensive coordinator and he watches as much film as anyone I know," said Prairie Coach Mike Morrissey. "We try to identify their big plays, the plays they run the most and we did a nice job of that.
“(The defense) kept giving us opportunities offensively to make plays and fortunately we were able to put one drive together. Against a good Cedar Falls team, that was enough tonight.”
Cedar Falls took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on the TD pass from Hansen to Boomgarden.
Sam Drysdale boomed a 50-yard field goal just before halftime to pull Prairie within 7-3 at intermission.
Christensen scored the go-ahead touchdown for Prairie in the third quarter and Drysdale's PAT made it 10-7. Neither team scored in the fourth period and the Hawks came home with a much-needed victory.
Prairie collected 18 first downs and held Cedar Falls to only seven.
