HERSHEY, Pa. - Farai Sewera of Coe became the third national wrestling champion in school history Saturday night when he whipped Tyler Schneider of Wisconsin-La Crosse, 9-4, in the 165-pound finals at the NCAA meet in Hershey, Pa.
Coe finished seventh in the team standings with 40.5 points and had three All-Americans. Augsburg topped Wartburg for the national title, 100 to 89.5.
Tyler Burkle won an NCAA title for the Kohawks in 2008 and Clayton Rush was a two-time champion in 2010 and 2011.
Sewera, a junior from Roselle, Ill., was ranked No. 2 at 165 pounds and Schneider was ranked No. 4. Sewera nipped Sam Guidi of Waynsburg, 5-4, in the semifinals earlier Saturday.
Ryan Harrington of Coe finished fourth at 174 pounds Saturday and Donnie Horner placed fifth at 197 pounds to become All-Americans.
Harrington, ranked No. 7 at 174, was pinned by third-ranked Zach Zotollo of TCNJ in 5:19 in the championship semifinals. Harrington beat Tory Cain of RIOT, 5-3, in the consolation semifinals and lost to second-ranked Josh Thomas of Messiah, 9-3, in the consolation match for third place.
Horner lost to second-ranked Shane Siefert of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 7-3, in the championship semifinals. Horner lost to third-ranked Aaron Karns of Delaware Valley in the consolation semifinals and defeated Gerard Roman of Wartburg, 8-5, for fifth place.
