The Kirkwood and Southeastern junior college baseball teams engaged in an old-fashioned slugfest at the Kirkwood field Saturday afternoon and finished with a split.
The fourth-ranked Blackhawks socked Kirkwood 20-9 in the first game. The Eagles rebounded for a 14-11 triumph in the nightcap.
The two clubs also split a doubleheader in West Burlington on Friday.
Kirkwood is now 18-13 overall and 6-6 in the ICCAC conference. Southeastern is 25-8 and 9-3.
Randy Perez belted a home run and drove in six runs for Kirkwood in the second game. Southeastern bolted to a 6-1 lead, but the Eagles erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 10-6 lead.
The Blackhawks dusted themselves off and grabbed an 11-10 edge in the top of the sixth, but Kirkwood tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. The Eagles took a 13-11 lead in the seventh, made it 14-11 in the eighth and got the victory.
Jack Fitzgerald went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the 14-11 victory. Bryce Grimm was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Sulliam Rios Reyes had two RBIs and two runs scored. Austin Saikal and Kolton Smith had two hits and drove in two runs.
Rios Reyes was 3-for-4 in the first game. Ozzie Adams, Perez, Hayden Sloane and Grimm had two hits. Grimm drove in three runs, making him 5-for-8 in the doubleheader with five RBIs and two runs scored.
Southeastern scored 14 runs in the third inning of the first game. Kirkwood responded with eight runs in the bottom of the third to pull within 15-9, but the rally ended there.
