Lela Sellers of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.
Sellers, a 5-foot-11 senior, is one of the top basketball players in the state and has committed to play college ball at Liberty University, which is an NCAA Division I school.
Sellers had a big weekend for the Cougars in two victories over ranked teams. It began Friday night when she poured in 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 65-61 victory at fifth-ranked Iowa City High.
On Saturday night, Sellers scored 13 points and snared 17 rebounds in a 54-48 triumph over 11th-ranked Pleasant Valley at Kennedy. The Cougars have a 3-1 record this season and are ranked 12th in Class 5A, with the only loss coming on the road at No. 1 Waukee.
Sellers is averaging 20 points and 11.8 rebounds. She ranks fourth in Class 5A in scoring and is No. 1 in rebounding. She also has eight assists and seven steals this season and has made 6 of 13 3-pointers.
Sellers averaged 14.5 points and 5.2 rebounds in her first season at Kennedy last year after moving here from Minnesota. She was named second team all-state by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.
