MASON CITY - Erin Hocker tossed a two-hit shutout Wednesday as the seventh-ranked Kirkwood Eagles blanked NIACC, 2-0, in the first game of their ICCAC doubleheader in Mason City.
NIACC won the second game, 13-8.
Hocker struck out 10 batters and did not allow any walks in her gem. Taleah Smith socked a two-run homer in the fifth inning for the only runs in the ballgame. Rachel Stewart had two hits.
Kirkwood jumped to a 5-0 lead in the second inning in the nightcap, but NIACC responded with 13 runs in its next four at-bats for the victory.
Shelby Hulsebus was 3-for-4 and scored three times for the Eagles in the 13-8 setback. Jamie Finn and Stewart had two hits. Hocker was saddled with the loss in relief.
The split left Kirkwood at 22-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference. NIACC is 13-7 overall and 5-1 in the league. Kirkwood and NIACC are tied for second place in the ICCAC standings, one game behind DMACC (6-0).
