Ryan Sweeney likely out for season

The Boston Herald is reporting that Red Sox outfielder Ryan Sweeney had surgery Tuesday to repair a broken knuckle on his left, throwing hand and is likely out for the season.

Sweeney, a graduate of Cedar Rapids Xavier, broke his pinkie finger Monday night when he punched a door in the Red Sox dugout after being robbed of a base-hit in the eighth inning of Boston's 7-3 win over the Detroit Tigers. He was removed from the game in the top of the ninth because he could not throw the ball.

The Herald and other news outlets reported that Sweeney is expected to miss eight weeks, effectively making him out for the season.

Sweeney apologized to his Red Sox teammates and Boston fans for injuring himself with the following tweet on his Twitter account Tuesday morning:

"I just want to apologize to me teammates, #RedSox, and fans. I don't normally loose (sic) my cool and this was not an intentional action."

Sweeney, 27, is in his first season with the Red Sox, who acquired him in an off-season trade with the Oakland Athletics. He got off to a hot start at the beginning of the season, when he was one of the major league leaders in doubles. He is batting .260 with 19 doubles and 16 RBIs in 60 games.

This is Sweeney's third stint on the disabled list this season. He was placed on the DL from May 20-27 with concussion symptoms suffered while making a diving catch in Philadelphia. He also was sidelined from June 17 to July 7 with a toe injury.

Sweeney is a lifetime .280 hitter in seven major league seasons. He was a second-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in June 2003 and had brief appearances in two major league seasons with the White Sox. He spent four years with Oakland and had his best season in 2009 when he batted .293 with six home runs, 31 doubles and 53 RBIs in 134 games.
