Kirkwood Community College - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

KCC baseball gets No. 3 seed for regional

The Kirkwood Eagles made a spirited run for the ICCAC conference baseball title this season, but a pair of one-run losses to Southeastern this weekend ruined their chances.

The first one-run setback occurred in the second game of their doubleheader in West Burlington on Friday. The other one-run defeat happened in the first game of their twinbill at Kirkwood on Saturday.

Flip those two outcomes, and the 11th-ranked Eagles would have been the 2018 conference champs.

"It was a tight series," said Kirkwood Coach Todd Rima. "We were one hit away, one play away.

"But against a really good team, we gave them some free outs and free chances and they took advantage of it."

Kirkwood needed to win 3-of-4 games from Southeastern to claim the league title. Instead, the Blackhawks won 3-of-4 to earn the conference championship for themselves.

Southeastern swept Kirkwood on Friday, 9-1 and 3-2. The fourth-ranked Blackhawks won the first game of their doubleheader Saturday, 10-9, but the Eagles bounced back with a 13-2 victory in five innings in the second contest.

Myers starred at Burlington Notre Dame High School and graduated in  2017. She averaged 5.5 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.7 assists in addition to scoring nearly 25 points per game. She made 83 3-pointers in 25 games, an average of 3.3 per game.

Myers played in 23 games at Wisconsin-Parkside this past season with one starting assignment. She averaged 12.1 minutes, 2.5 points and 1.2 rebounds for Parkside, an NCAA Division II school that finished with a 9-21 record.

Myers will have one year of eligibility at Kirkwood, which finished second at the NJCAA Division II national tournament this past season after winning the national title in 2017.

SCC sweeps Eagles out of ICCAC race

WEST BURLINGTON - The Kirkwood Eagles needed to win their weekend  series against Southeastern to win the conference baseball title, but  their hopes were dashed Friday in West Burlington.

Kuch helps No. 5 Eagles slam Ellsworth

Lauren Kuch lofted a long fly ball down the left-field line and dutifully ran to first base Friday afternoon, thinking she'd have to turn around and take another swing.

"I actually thought it was going to be foul," she said.

Kuch knew she was wrong when she heard a loud "ping" as the ball hit the metal foul pole. The bases were loaded, so it became a grand slam home run instead of a long strike.

"I was excited," Kuch said. "Yeah, I was excited."

Kuch's grand slam in the bottom of the first inning steered the fifth-ranked Eagles to a 10-0 victory over Ellsworth in the opening round of the regional junior college tournament at Kirkwood.

The game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings due to the college mercy rule.

Moseley is sparkplug for No. 10 Eagles

Chili Moseley plays a variety of positions for the Kirkwood baseball team and plays them all very well, but it would be terribly unfair to label him as simply a utility player.

Moseley is entirely capable of starting at second base, third base or right field for the Eagles - he's done all three in style - but the 5-foot-6 sophomore is extremely valuable at plugging whatever hole crops up at Kirkwood.

He's starting at second base now with Cal Clark on the disabled list and had a sensational weekend series against Ellsworth, going 8-for-12 with two doubles, a triple, a home and five RBIs in four games.

Kirkwood swept Ellsworth by identical 10-0 scores Sunday, with both games stopped in the sixth inning due to the college mercy rule in walk-off fashion. Moseley's two-run homer, a laser to left field, ended the second game for the twin-killing.

Moseley stays in the lineup on a regular basis due to his bat, his glove, his positive attitude and daring base-running, although sometimes it looks like Coach Todd Rima would like to put a lasso around him when he's trying for an extra base.

Moseley is hitting .357 with 25 RBIs and Rima loves writing his name in the lineup, no matter what position he happens to be playing.
