Kohawks fall at No.6 Wartburg

PDF

WAVERLY - Coe took the opening kick and drove 77 yards for a quick touchdown against sixth-ranked Wartburg Saturday, but it was mostly downhill from there for the Kohawks in an Iowa Conference game in Waverly.

Wartburg scored 24 straight points and topped the Kohawks, 31-14, on a sunny day at Walston-Hoover Stadium.

Coe quarterback Josh Rekers passed for 300 yards and two touchdowns, but the Kohawks rushed for only 34 yards and were turned into a one-sided football team by Wartburg's defense.

The Kohawks moved 77 yards in six plays on their first possession and took a 7-0 lead on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Rekers to Mitchell Malloy. The Kohawks did not score again until Kazumasa Ikoma snared a 22-yard TD pass from Rekers with 33 seconds left in the third period to pull the visitors within 24-14.

Wartburg scored early in the fourth period to take control again.

Elijah Phillips and Ikoma caught six passes for Coe. Rekers hit 23 of 32 passes for 300 yards and one interception. He was sacked three times.

Logan Schrader hit 24 of 37 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns for Wartburg. The Knights also ran for 231 yards in a balanced attack that produced 482 yards of total offense compared to 334 for Coe.

Coe fell to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Wartburg is 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the league.
