Coe falls to Wartburg in volleyball

WAVERLY - The Coe College volleyball team lost to Wartburg, 25-19, 25-23, 11-25, 25-21, in an Iowa Conference match in Waverly Wednesday night.

The Kohawks fell to 13-8 overall and 1-3 in the league. The Knights raised their records to 15-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Olivia Leisinger led Coe with 16 kills. Brianna Smith had 13 kills, Lauren Himan eight kills and Mackenzie Harbaugh eight kills.

Harbaugh dished out 40 assists. Madi Miller collected 18 digs, Ali Arns had 15 digs and Devon O'Connell had 11 digs.

 

Coe inducting 4 into Hall of Fame

Coe College will induct four new members into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame next weekend.

Peggy Schmitt Goerdt, Rajesh Venkatraman, Chris Weih and Bob Timmons will be honored at the 43rd Athletic Hall of Fame banquet on Friday, Oct. 16 and will be featured before Coe's football game against Simpson on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Goerdt (1990) left a lasting mark on the Coe softball program. Her 11 triples as a freshman still stands as the school record. She was named a second team All-American in 1990 at first base and her 40 RBIs stood as a single-season Coe record for a decade.

Goerdt's 23 career triples are still a school record and she graduated with a school-record 106 RBIs, which now ranks sixth in school history.

Miyake helps Coe boot Iowa Wesleyan

Shuhei Miyaka scored two goals Monday as the Coe men's soccer team blanked Iowa Wesleyan, 5-0, at Clark Field in Cedar Rapids.

Miyaka began the scoring with a free kick and also tallied on a penalty kick.

Mitch Renwick, Enoch Duval and Ryan Oppegard also tallied for the Kohawks. Alec Balta and Michael Alderson split time in goal for the shutout.

Jeffry Hernandez, Oppegard and Miyake collected assists.

Coe raised its record to 2-8-1. Iowa Wesleyan fell to 3-8-0.

Harbaugh, Sewera honored by Coe

Seniors Mackenzie Harbaugh and Farai Sewera have been named the 2014-15 Barron Bremner Outstanding Athletes at Coe College.

Harbaugh is an All-American setter for the Kohawk volleyball team, while Sewera is a national champion wrestler.

Harbaugh earned AVCA Third Team All-American honors during her junior campaign. She was the first player in school history named to the first, second or third team for All-American honors.

Harbaugh was also an AVCA All-Central Region First Team pick and was named to the All-Iowa Conference First Team. She set a school record with 81 aces, while also ranking eighth in the nation. She ranked 11th in the nation with 1,335 assists.

Sewera earned the fourth wrestling national championship in school history in March. He was also an All-American at 165 pounds and an Iowa Conference MVP.

Sewera was the runner-up at the NCAA Central Regional, snapping his 20-match winning streak that dated back to early December. He also earned All-Iowa Conference honors.

 

Anderson takes 2nd at regional tennis

ST. PETER, Minn. - Brady Anderson of Coe placed second at the ITA Midwest Regional tennis tournament Sunday in St. Peter, Minn.

Anderson, a Linn-Mar grad, bumped off No. 1 seed Jake Humphreys of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the semifinals Sunday morning.

Anderson lost to No. 2 seed Mohaned Al-Houni of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-2, 6-2, in the finals Sunday afternoon.

Anderson, who was seeded No. 4, won six straight matches in the regional tournament before falling short in the championship match.
