Coe College - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Kohawks spiked by No. 17 Whitewater

The 23rd-ranked Coe volleyball team was swept by No. 17 Wisconsin-Whitewater, 27-25, 25-22, 25-19, in a tight match Tuesday night at Eby Fieldhouse.

Lindsey Koch led the Kohawks with 10 kills. Mackenzie Harbaugh collected 25 assists and 14 digs.

Whitewater raised its record to 5-0. Coe fell to 4-2.

Martin tabs connections for new Kohawks

Bryan Martin has made a lot of good connections during his basketball career as a player and coach at seven different colleges.

It's paid off with a handsome recruiting class at Coe.

Martin has brought in 11 new players for the Kohawks and four of them came through his connections with his former coaches and former players through the years.

Take Zach Schlabaugh of Williamsburg. Schlabaugh's father, Dave, recruited Martin to play college basketball at Morningside. Now Martin has recruited Schlabaugh's son to play for him at Coe.

"We've kind of come full cycle there," said Martin.

Take Will Reichelt, a 6-foot-6 player from Pocatello, Idaho. One of Reichelt's coaches in school was a student manager at Indian Hills when Martin worked at that junior college.

Meyer thrilled with Coe recruits

Coe softball coach Diane Meyer figures she watched about 134 high school games this past season in search of talented new players for the Kohawks.

She's delighted with the results.

Meyer brought in 11 freshmen and one junior college transfer for the 2016 campaign.

"I'm really excited about them," said Meyer, entering her second year as head coach. "They're all really good players. I'm just really anxious to see how we mesh together."

Eight of the freshmen are from Iowa. Meyer began watching many of them years ago and received commitments even before their senior campaigns began in high school.

Even with their commitments in the bank, Meyer kept returning to their games to keep tabs on their progress. Jake Koolbeck, one of her student assistant coaches, often went with her or attended games on his own.
