Coe College - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Coe's terrific season has unhappy ending

LA CROSSE, Wis. - Maybe it was the day off on Saturday that killed the Kohawks when they had all that momentum.

Maybe trying to beat Wisconsin-La Crosse on its home field again was too much to ask.

Or maybe the baseball gods simply decided to smile on somebody else for a change.

Whatever it was, it doesn't matter now. The dirty deed is done.

The Kohawks lost twice to 20th-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse, 5-4 and 15-4, Sunday in the championship round of the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Tournament at Copeland Park.

Coe was hoping to reach the NCAA D3 World Series for the first time in school history. They came close, but the Kohawks are coming home and the La Crosse Eagles are heading to Appleton, Wis., for the national tournament for the first time in their history.

Kohawks face La Crosse again for title

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Coe College baseball team smashed Wisconsin-La Crosse, 11-5, in the winner's bracket finals of the NCAA Division III regional baseball tournament Friday night.

If the Kohawks (34-12) beat La Crosse (31-13) again Sunday, they'll make the College World Series for the first time in school history.

Wisconsin-La Crosse defeated Concordia, 10-3, in the loser's bracket final Saturday and will need two victories against Coe Sunday to win the Midwest regional title. The Kohawks need only one victory for the crown as the winner's bracket champion.

If Coe loses to La Crosse Sunday at noon, they'll play another game for the crown. If Coe beats La Crosse in the first game, the tournament will be over and the Kohawks will return home as champions.

The Division III national tournament will be played next week in Appleton, Wis.

Craig Konrardy and Michael Goerdt, batting 1-2 in the lineup, combined to go 10-for-11 at the plate with six runs scored and four RBIs Friday against La Crosse. Konrardy was 5-for-6 and Goerdt was 5-for-5.

AJ Reuter, Jack Hoffmann and Jory Heckenberg all had two hits and two RBIs for the Kohawks as the top five batters in the lineup went 16-for-26 with 10 RBIs.

Ben Jacobson was the beneficiary of all that offense Friday and was the winning pitcher.

The Kohawks broke the game open with six runs in the fourth inning for a 7-1 lead. They beat Wisconsin-La Crosse on La Crosse's home field.

LA CROSSE, Wis. - Jack Hoffmann picked up his fourth save in as many games as Coe survived three home runs from Ripon's Michael Polcyn to win, 5-4, in second-round NCAA Division III regional play here Thursday at Copeland Park.

The Kohawks (33-12) play in the winner's bracket final at 7:45 p.m. Friday against the winner of a game betweenWashington-St. Louis and Wisconsin-LaCrosse that was suspended by rain Thursday night with Washington leading, 6-5 in the third inning. That contest will be continued at 10 a.m. Friday
