Baseball duo, Alger gain IIAC honors

The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Coe baseball player Michael Goerdt has been named the league's male athlete of the week.

Teammate Jack Hoffmann was named the baseball pitcher of the week and thrower Melissa Alger garnered the weekly women's track honor.

Goerdt, a senior outfielder from Waterloo , hit .625 (10-of-16) with a 1.500 slugging percentage as the Kohawks took three out of four in a weekend series with Central. He set a school record with three home runs in the series finale, including a walk-off shot in the bottom of the ninth. Goerdt is the 11th NCAA Division III player this season to hit three home runs in a game.

Hoffmann, a senior from Dubuque, became the first IIAC pitcher to reach seven wins this season after picking up a pair of victories in relief against Central over the weekend. He threw two innings in a 7-3 win in game two of the April 17 doubleheader, allowing one hit and striking out one. Hoffmann also threw the final five innings of game two on April 18 — a 7-6 Coe walk-off win — striking out one, walking one and allowing three hits.

Alger, a junior from Lisbon, won the shot put and discus at the Central Dutch Triangular on April 18. Her winning distance of 155 feet, 4 inches broke the school record she set last season. It is also the top distance in the Iowa Conference and ranks fifth nationally. Alger won the shot put with a toss of 37-9 1/2
