Coe College - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

IIAC honors Coe trio, Sommer, Utley

Coe athletes Connor Alberhasky, Melissa Alger and Riley Galbraith along with former Metro preps Kristie Sommer and DJ Utley received weekly honors from the Iowa Conference.

Alberhasky, a senior from Iowa City, threw the third no-hitter in Coe baseball history in a 7-0 win over Loras on Saturday. He struck out five and walked just one while throwing just 60 pitches. It was the first no-hitter in Iowa Conference play since 2011 when Loras’ Kendall Paluch twirled a no-hitter against Cornell.

Alger earned the weekly women's track honor. A junior from Lisbon, Alger won the discus competition at the Washington-St. Louis Invitational with a toss of 146 feet, 3 inches Her distance ranks third nationally.

Galbraith, a junior from Kennedy, posted a pair of victories as the Kohawk men's tennis team picked up its 17th consecutive Iowa Conference regular-season dual win with an 8-1 decision over Luther. He defeated Trent Schneider, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 2 singles, then paired with Brady Anderson for an 8-6 win over Sam Cychosz and Anders Jensen at No. 1 doubles. Galbraith and Anderson are now 10-2 in doubles.

Sommer, a freshman outfielder on the Wartburg softball team who prepped at Linn-Mar, hit .611 (11-of-18) and slugged 1.000 as the Knights won six of seven games last week. She had a double, two home runs, 10 RBIs, stole one base and scored seven runs.

Utley, a Wartburg senior first baseman from Kennedy, tied a school record with three home runs in an 11-8 win over Central on March 28. In the four-game weekend series, Utley hit .462 (6-of-13) with a 1.385 slugging percentage with four home runs, 10 RBIs and five runs scored as the Knights took three of four games.

Putman, Weeces toss shutouts for Coe

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Kalyn Putman and Arran Weeces pitched shutouts for the Coe softball team at the Augustana Invitational Sunday.

Putman tossed a two-hitter as the Kohawks blanked Ripon, 3-0, in their game Sunday. Weeces followed with a five-hit shutout as the Kohawks topped Wisconsin-Stout, 8-0, in five innings in their second outing.

Putman (2-1) struck out six batters and walked three. Maliah Fligg went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two runs scored against Ripon. Paige Zahner and Anna Corkery also had two hits.

Freeborn, Alger win titles for Kohawks

ST. LOUIS - Beau Freeborn and Melissa Alger won individual titles for the Coe track teams at the Washington University Invitational Saturday in St. Louis.

Freeborn captured the 800 meter run in 1 minute, 56.03 seconds. Alger took the discus crown with a toss of 146 feet, 3 1/2 inches.

Chris Hawkins placed fourth in the long jump for the Kohawks at 21 feet, 8 inches. Jacob Hayes placed sixth in the discus (134-11 1/2), Robbie Peters was seventh in the discus (131-9), Austin Springsteen was seventh in the 1500 (4:05.61), Erik Franklin finished seventh in the 400 (51.05) and Franklin was eighth in the 200 (22.59). Coe finished fifth in the 4x400 relay (3:25.31).

Sammie Osterberger placed third in the 400 hurdles (1:07.12) and finished fifth in the 100 hurdles (15.53) for the Coe women's team. Amanda Skarban was fifth in the discus (118-7).

Both of Coe's track teams finished ninth in the team standings. There were 26 teams in the women's competition and 27 teams in the men's competition.

   

Coe softball splits at tourney

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Maliah Fligg tossed a three-hitter as the Coe softball team defeated Ripon College, 7-1, in its first game at the Augustana Invitational on Saturday.

The Kohawks lost their second game to Augustana, 6-2.

Fligg (4-3) pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and no walks. The only run against her was unearned.

Fligg drove in two runs to help her own cause. Anna Corkery also had two RBIs for the Kohawks in their victory and Erin Lang scored two runs.

Coe netters roll by Luther

Noah Sprinkel defeated Kyle Appel, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles Saturday as the Coe men's tennis team rolled to an 8-1 victory over Luther in an Iowa Conference meet at the Clark Racquet Center.

Riley Galbraith, Brady Anderson, Ryan Hickman, Chad Moklestad and Alex Bernt also won their singles matches for the Kohawks.

Coe, ranked 38th in the country, raised its records to 13-4 overall and 3-0 in the league. Luther fell to 6-9 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
