Coe's Tomlinson, Hickman gain IIAC honors

Coe baseball player Cole Tomlinson and men's tennis player Ryan Hickman have earned player of the week honors from the Iowa Conference.

Tomlinson, a senior utility player, hit .692 with a 1.154 slugging percentage as the Kohawks finished their spring trip with four wins in five outings to improve to 7-1 overall. He was 2-for-4 with four RBIs in a 9-5 loss to Wittenburg, then went 2-for-2 and was beaned twice, scoring all four times, in Coe’s 10-5 win over Dickinson (Pa.).

In Coe’s 17-1, 7-inning win over Principia, Tomlinson hit a two-run home run in his only official at-bat and drew three walks, scoring all four times he reached base. In a doubleheader sweep over Fontbonne, he finished 4-for-6 with a double, five RBIs and three runs scored as Coe posted wins by scores of 7-6 and 19-2.

Hickman, a junior, went 3-0 singles and 3-1 in doubles last week. Playing at No. 4 singles, he defeated McMurry’s Rayce Roberson (6-0, 6-0), Frankie Fischer of No. 20 Texas-Tyler (6-1, 6-2) and Gunnar Peery of NAIA No. 13 Aquinas (6-2, 6-1).

Playing at No. 2 doubles, he paired with Brady Anderson for an 8-2 win against McMurry’s Carlos Perez and Hunter Ward and an 8-6 loss to Texas-Tyler’s Daniel Budd and Harry Kelleher. He also played a couple of matches with Noah Sprinkel, posting an 8-0 shutout of Aquinas’ Andy Struble and Evan Taylor at the No. 2 position and an 8-1 win over Drew Weinhold and Will Byler of Penn State Berks at the No. 1 position. He is 9-1 in his last 10 singles matches.

 

Sewera makes finals at D3 wrestling

HERSHEY, Pa. - Farai Sewera of Coe nipped Sam Guidi of Waynsburg, 5-4, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III wrestling tournament Saturday and will be aiming for the national title at 165 pounds Saturday night.

Sewera, ranked No. 2 at 165 pounds, will face fourth-ranked Tyler Schneider of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the championship match at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa.

Ryan Harrington of Coe finished fourth at 174 pounds Saturday and Donnie Horner placed fifth at 197 pounds.

Harrington, ranked No. 7 at 174, was pinned by third-ranked Zach Zotollo of TCNJ in 5:19 in the championship semifinals. Harrington beat Tory Cain of RIOT, 5-3, in the consolation semifinals and lost to second-ranked Josh Thomas of Messiah, 9-3, in the consolation match for third place.

Hawkins places 13th at NCAA track

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Coe freshman Chris Hawkins placed 13th in the long jump at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday with a leap of 21 feet, 9 1/2 inch.

Dominique Neloms of Wisconsin-La Crosse won the long jump at 24 feet, 2 1/4 inches.

Sheldon wins 100th match at NCAA meet

HERSHEY, Pa. - Ryan Sheldon of Coe won the 100th match of his career Friday when he upset sixth-ranked Ben Swarr of Messiah, 3-1, at 184 pounds in the opening round of the NCAA Division III wrestling tournament in Hershey, Pa.

Sheldon became the 12th member of the 100-win club at Coe.

Farai Sewera, ranked No. 2 at 165 pounds, defeated Eric Hensel of Augsburg, 17-12, in the opening round. Ryan Harrington, ranked No. 7 at 174 pounds, defeated Mason Mergener of Concordia (Wis.), 6-2, in the first round.

Donnie Horner upset third-ranked Aaron Karns of Delaware Valley, 3-2, in the opening round at 197 pounds. Jan Rosenberg lost both of his matches Friday for the Kohawks.

Coe was in 13th place in the team standings heading into the quarterfinals Friday night.

 

Coe baseball team pounds Principia

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Coe baseball team collected 16 hits and belted Principia, 17-1, in seven innings Thursday in Winter Haven, Fla.

Cole Tomlinson socked a home run, scored four times and had two RBIs. Michael Redmond went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. Craig Konrardy, Jory Heckenberg, Alec Zwanziger and Grant Henning had two hits apiece.

Henning drove in three runs.

Ben Jacobson pitched five strong innings for the victory. He struck out seven batters and allowed one earned run.
