Coe softball sweeps 2 games

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Coe softball team got strong pitching from Arran Weeces and Maliah Fligg and won two games on its spring trip to Florida Thursday.

Weeces tossed a four-hit shutout as the Kohawks blanked Husson, 4-0. She struck out eight batters and did not walk anyone.

Fligg pitched a complete game with three strikeouts as Coe topped Muskingum, 7-2. She did not allow any earned runs and walked only one batter.

Erin Lang, Brianna Gardner ad Brenna Winn had two hits against Husson. Anna Corkery and Fligg had two hits against Muskingum and Corkery drove in three runs.

Coe raised its record to 8-4.

Coe netters enjoy successful trip

The Coe College tennis teams enjoyed a successful spring trip to Florida.

The Coe men's team won two matches Thursday and is heading home with a 12-3 overall record. The Coe women's team split two matches Thursday and is coming home with a 15-5 record.

Noah Sprinkel won his match at No. 1 singles to help the Kohawks top Aquinas, 7-2. Brady Anderson moved into the No. 1 spot against Penn State-Berks and helped the Kohawks claim a 6-3 victory.

Haley Resnick cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles as Coe rolled by Penn State-Berks, 8-1. The Coe women were trimmed by Wheaton, 5-4, in their other match Thursday.

Kohawk softball team splits

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Aaran Weeces threw a one-hit shutout as the Coe softball team blanked Defiance, 5-0, in the second of two games the Kohawks played Wednesday.

Coe (6-4) dropped  4-3 decision to Wheaton (Mass.), in its opening game on Wednesday.

Against Defiance, Weeces struck out 10 and walked one. Erin Lang and Brenna Winn each had two hits and two RBIs for Coe.

In the opener, Wheaton jumped to a 4-1 lead. The Kohawks rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by losing pitcher Maliah Fligg but weren't able to get the tying run home. Catcher Haley Smith had three hits for Coe while Lang added a pair.

   

Heckenberg powers Coe to victory

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Coe had a season-high 16 hits on Wednesday, as the Kohawks downed Dickinson 10-5.

It was also the most runs scored by the Kohwks (4-1) this season.

Jory Heckenberg led the Kohawks with four hits, driving home five runs. Craig Konrardy, Cole Tomlinson, Michael Redmond, Alec Zwanziger and Ben Jacobson all had two hits apiece.

Tomlinson scored four runs, with Heckenberg crossing the plate twice. Jacobson had 2 RBI.

Jack Hoffmann picked up his second win of the week. He allowed three runs (none earned) on eight hits in six innings.

Brady Anderson honored by IIAC

Coe freshman Brady Anderson has been named the Performer of the Week in men's tennis by the Iowa Conference.

Anderson, a state champion from Linn-Mar, improved his record to 17-2 with three victories in Florida over the weekend. He has won 10 straight matches for the Kohawks at No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles.

He also has a 17-2 record in doubles.
