Coe's Hawkins takes 2nd in triple jump

WAVERLY - Chris Hawkins of Coe placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet at the Iowa Conference indoor track meet in Waverly Saturday.

Hawkins also finished third in the 60 hurdles in 8.45 seconds. Erik Franklin of Coe finished third in the triple jump at 43 feet, 9 inches.

Kenzie Drahn placed third in the triple jump for the Coe women at 35 feet, 6 1/2 inches.

The Kohawks placed fifth in the men's standings and sixth in the women's standings. Central and Wartburg tied for the men's title. Wartburg claimed the women's championship.

Coe tennis teams top Kalamazoo

The Coe tennis teams won their matches against Kalamazoo College at the Clark Racquet Center Saturday.

Noah Sprinkel of Coe defeated Branden Metzler at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-3, to help the Kohawks sweep to a 9-0 verdict for the men. Riley Galbraith, Brady Anderson, Ryan Hockman, Alex Bernt and Chad Moklestad also won their singles matches for Coe (7-1).

Amy Sebastian, Jordan Ferree and Sarah Lasecki captured their singles matches for the Coe women in a tight 5-4 verdict over Kalamazoo. The Kohawks raised their record to 12-2.

5 Coe wrestlers make national tourney

DUBUQUE - Five members of the Coe wrestling team have earned spots in the NCAA Division III national tournament that will be held in Pennsylvania March 13-14.

Farai Sewera (165) and Ryan Sheldon (184) placed second for the Kohawks at the Central Regional tournament at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque Saturday. Jan Rosenberg (125), Ryan Harrington (174) and Donnie Horner (197) finished third and advanced to nationals.

Sewara lost to Andrew Steiert of Wartburg, 5-3, in overtime for the regional title at 165 pounds. Sheldon lost to Devin Peterson of Wartburg, 4-0, in the finals at 184 pounds.

Wartburg captured the team championship with 167.5 points with Luther second at 127.5 markers. Coe won a tight battle with Cornell and Loras for third place in the 13-team tournament.

Hawkins sets Coe record in long jump

WAVERLY - Coe freshman Chris Hawkins broke the school record in the long jump Friday when he flew 23 feet, 6 3/4 inches at the Iowa Conference indoor track meet in Waverly.

Hawkins snapped the school mark that had stood since 1977. He finished second in the long jump Friday behind Eric Larson of Central, who went 23-7 1/2.

Erik Franklin of Coe placed third in the long jump at 22-6 1/4. Laura Bybee placed third in the pole vault at 10 feet, 2 1/2 inch.

The Coe men are in fourth place in the eight-team standings with 31 points heading into Day 2 of the conference meet on Saturday. The Coe women are in sixth place with 13 points. Wartburg has the lead in both meets.

 

Coe women fall at Luther, 89-82

DECORAH - The Coe women's basketball team put 82 points on the board Thursday night and had six players in double figures, but it wasn't enough in the semifinals of the Iowa Conference tournament.

The Kohawks lost to Luther, 89-82, and finished the season with an 18-9 record.

Coe fell behind by 16 points in the second half and was never able to catch up. The Kohawks pulled within seven points in the final minute on 3-pointers by Courteney McCrary and Mickey Hansche, but ran out of time.
