Coe men sweep pair of matches

The Coe men's tennis team had a long day of tennis and came away with two wins on Sunday.

They opened the day with a 9-0 road win at Cornell, then drove back to Cedar Rapids from Mount Vernon and blanked Quincy University, 9-0.

The Kohawks mixed and matched their line-ups in both matches. Only two of the 12 singles matches went three sets.

Coe is 4-1 after the two victories.

Quincy hands Coe women first loss

Quincy University, an NCAA Division II school, squeaked by the Coe, 5-4, on Sunday at the Clark Racquet Center to hand the Kohawks their first loss of the season.

The visiting Hawks led 2-1 after doubles play. Coe's lone win came as Haley Resnick and Sarah Lasecki defeated Elizabeth Kuenzi and G. Papachrisanthou, 8-3, at No. 2.

Coe quickly tied the match in singles play as Jordan Ferree beat Kuenzi, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3s.

Quincy took a 3-2 lead as Amy Kuhle downed Resnick 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1. The Kohawks took their first lead of the match with simultaneous wins from Laura Birky at No. 4 and Amy Sebastian at No. 2. Birky downed Michelle Gass, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, while Sebastian beat Sydney Lynch, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5.

The Hawks took victories in the final two singles matches to get the win.

Coe is now 11-1.

Fitzgerald wins breaststroke for Coe women

Sam Fitzgerald won the 200-yard breaststroke to lead the Coe College women’s swimming team in the Liberal Arts Championships on Saturday at Coe.

The Kohawks finished fourth with 368.5 points in the women’s standings, and the Coe men were ninth with 138 points.

Coe’svwas Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year for the meet.

Fitzgerald won the 200 breaststroke in 2 minutes, 24.84 seconds.

Coe women win relay at Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Coe College women’s track team won the distance medley relay and placed third in the 4x400-meter relay in the UW-Platteville Invitational on Saturday at Williams Fieldhouse.

Team scores were not recorded.

The team of Katie Guinane, Maddie Bain, Amanda Donovan and Allison Rogers won the distance medley in 14 minutes, 41.01 second. Amanda Brummet, Sara Bechard, Allie Osterberger and Sammie Osterberger were third in the 4x400 in 4:14.63.

The Coe men had two second-place finishers. Chris Hawkins was second in the long jump at 7.02 meters and Erik Franklin was second in the triple jump with a leap of 13.48.

Other top finishers for the Coe women included Kenzie Drahn (fourth in the triple jump at 10.63 meters), Allie Osterberger (fifth in the 60 hurdles in 9.84), Laura Bybee (fifth in the pole vault at 2.96 meters), Jessica Harris (sixth in the high jump at 1.50 meters) and Amanda Skarban (sixth in the shot put at 10.92 meters).

Chris Hawkins was third in the 60 hurdles for the Coe men in 8.51. Franklin, Anton Jones, Dray Schreiber and Beau Freeborn were fourth in the 4x400 in 3.31.76. Alex Deeds was seventh in the shot put at 13.79 meters, Derek Ross was seventh in the high jump at 1.75 meters, Freeborn was seventh in the 800 in 1:58.88 and Austin Springsteen was eighth in the mile at 4:26.

 

Coe men’s tennis earns 2 sweeps

The 35th-ranked Coe College men’s tennis team earned a pair of 9-0 wins Saturday at Clark Racquet Center, sweeping Buena Vista and Monmouth College 9-0.

The Kohawks lost just one set in singles competition on the day and improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the IIAC. Buena Vista fell to 0-2 and 0-1. Monmouth fell to 2-2.
