Loras women edge Coe, 63-57

DUBUQUE – Mickey Hansche scored 15 points and Aleena Hobbs had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Coe College women’s basketball team, but it wasn’t enough in a 63-57 loss to Loras College on Saturday at Loras.

The Kohawks led 9-2 early in the game, but Loras quickly fought back and led 35-31 at halftime. Coe kept pace in the second half, but couldn’t hold on down the stretch. Loras made four free throws in the final 33 seconds.

Victoria May scored 21 points for Loras and Kathleen Cabrera added 14 points.

Loras is 14-9 overall and Coe is 15-8. Both teams are 8-4 in he IIAC.

Coe men earn IIAC berth with win

DUBUQUE – The Coe College men’s basketball team clinch a berth in the IIAC Tournament with a 71-66 win over Loras College on Saturday at Loras.

Senior JT Vonderhaar scored 12 points to become the 17th player in Coe history to reach 1,000 points in his career. He also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Matt Daoust led the Kohawks with 19 points. Matt Vonderhaar added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Nathaniel Smith scored 20 points to lead Loras. Justin VanWambeke chipped in 11.

Fitzgerald stars at Liberal Arts swim

Sam Fitzgerald of Coe set school, pool and meet records Friday by winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.80 at the Liberal Arts Championships at the Eby Fieldhouse pool.

Fitzgerald is a freshman from Linn-Mar.

Jasmine Deng of Coe placed second in 3-meter diving with 411.10 points. Kendall Bundy, Fitzgerald, Kenni Sterns and Lindsay Meade placed third in the 200 medley relay in 1:50.62.

The Coe women are tied for third place with 277.5 points heading into the final day of the meet on Saturday. The Coe men are ninth and last in their standings.

No.17 Coe wrestlers trim Dubuque

Ryan Sheldon collected a technical fall at 184 pounds Thursday night to help 17th-ranked Coe edge Dubuque, 18-17, in an Iowa Conference wrestling meet at Eby Fieldhouse.

Farai Sewera (165) posted a major decision for the Kohawks (9-8, 5-2). Luke Kremer (141), Josh Donkle (149) and Donnie Horner (197) won regular decisions for Coe.

Dubuque fell to 8-12 overall and 3-4 in the league.

Fitzgerald takes 3rd in 50 free

Sam Fitzgerald of Coe placed third in the women's 50 freestyle in 24.90 seconds Thursday on Day 2 of the Liberal Arts Championships at the Eby Fieldhouse pool.

Coe is in fourth place in the women's standings out of 11 teams. The Coe men are ninth and last in their standings.

The meet continues Friday and Saturday.
