Hansche sparks Kohawks by Dubuque

DUBUQUE - Mickey Hansche poured in a career-high 28 points Saturday as Coe knocked off Dubuque, 70-56, in an Iowa Conference women's basketball game at the Stoltz Sports Center in Dubuque.

The outcome left the Iowa Conference race in a mad scramble entering the final weeks of the season. Dubuque is still in first place with an 8-2 record, but the Spartans hold only a slim one-game lead now over Coe, Luther and Loras at 7-3.

Megan Hayes collected 14 points and seven rebounds for the Kohawks (14-7 overall). Aleena Hobbs finished with her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Allie Wirth had 11 rebounds for Coe.

Jenna Kotas scored 22 points for Dubuque (14-7).

Coe wrestlers dodge Cornell, 18-16

The 17th-ranked Coe College wrestling team escaped No. 18 Cornell, 18-16, Friday at Eby Fieldhouse to take a 7-5 lead in the Bremner Cup All-Sports Standings.

Coe’s second-ranked Farai Sewera earned a 12-3 major decision over Michael Maksimovic at 165 pounds, but fourth-ranked Ryan Harrington suffered a 7-5 loss to Cornell’s Brent Ham at 174.

Coe improved to 8-8, while Cornell fell to 12-8.

Knights drop Coe from IIAC lead

WAVERLY - Jordan Cannon scored 18 points to lead four Wartburg players in double figures as the Knights upset Coe, 86-70, in an Iowa Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Buzz Levick Arena.

Wartburg (5-4, 12-8 IIAC) led 37-28 at halftime and maintained the advantage throughout the second half. The Knights were 23-of-24 from the foul line. Nate Woeste and Clay Cook each had 16 points while Nick Webber finished with 14. Wartburg outrebounded the Kohawks, 41-29. Cook had 12 caroms, Webber 11.

JT Vonderhaar led Coe (13-7, 7-2) with 15 points. Mike Vonderhaar and Jacob Timm added 13 each. The loss dropped Coe one game behind Buena Vista in the IIAC standings.

Sommer twins lift Wartburg past Coe

WAVERLY - Linn-Mar graduates Kristie and Katie Sommer scored 10 points apiece to lead Wartburg to a 60-54 win over Coe in Iowa Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night at Buzz Levick Arena.

The Knights (13-7, 4-5 IIAC) built a 30-20 halftime lead and held off a late charge to avenge an earlier loss to the Kohawks in Cedar Rapids. Kailey Kladivo led Wartburg with 12 points. The Sommer twins each hit a pair of 3-point baskets for Wartburg.

Coe (13-7, 6-3) dropped into a three-way tie for second place in the league with Loras and Luther, two games behind Dubuque. Prairie graduate Courteney McCrary led the Kohawks with 13 points and seven rebounds. Megan Hayes finished with 11 points.

3 Kohawks honored by Iowa Conference

Tucker Dangremond, Sam Fitzgerald and Laura Bybee were named Performers of the Week Monday by the Iowa Conference.

Dangremond, a sophomore from Colorado Springs, Colo., was honored in men's swimming. He won the 100 breaststroke in a meet against Grinnell and helped the Kohawks capture the 200 freestyle relay.

Fitzgerald, a freshman from Linn-Mar, was saluted in women's swimming. She broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke for the third time this season in a meet against Northern Iowa and helped the Kohawks win the 200 freestyle relay against Grinnell.

Bybee, a junior from Pecatonica, Ill., was honored in women's track. She broke her own school record in the pole vault at 10 feet, 6 3/4 inches to claim first prize at the Wisconsin-Platteville Open.
