Sewera prevents Wartburg wrestling sweep

WAVERLY – Farai Sewera was the lone winner for the No. 17 Coe College wrestling team in a 35-3 loss to top-ranked Wartburg on Friday.

Sewera, ranked No. 2 at 165 pounds, earned a 9-2 decision over Wartburg’s Nick Michael for his 15th-consecutive win.

Bundy earns swimming win for Coe women

CEDAR FALLS – Kendall Bundy was the lone winner for the Coe College women’s swimming team in a 188-77 loss to Northern Iowa on Friday at the Glen F. Henry Pool.

Bundy won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 23.34 seconds. She finished second on the 100 backstroke in 1:02.78.

Kohawks hold off Dubuque, 69-63

Matt Vonderhaar and Matt Daoust each scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack as Coe held on to a share of the Iowa Conference lead with a 69-63 win over Dubuque on Wednesday night at Eby Fieldhouse.

Coe (12-6, 6-1) got a double-double from Jacob Timm (12 points, 10 rebounds). JT Vonderhaar also grabbed 12 boards.

The Kohawks, who trailed 30-26 at the break, won the game from the foul line, hitting 27-of-37 compared to 11-of-17 for the Spartans.

Spartans top Coe, take over IIAC lead

Dubuque forced Coe into 20 turnovers and held sharp-shooting guard Mickey Hansche to just two points in a 77-72 win Wednesday night at Eby Fieldhouse to take over sole possession of first place in the Iowa Conference.

The visiting Spartans (12-6, 6-1) were led by Jenna Kotas with 16 points.

Coe (12-6, 5-2) was paced by Prairie graduate Courteney McCrary with 16 points. Former Washington standout Aleena Hobbs added 15 while Jenna Lehman chipped in with 13.

Coe's Vonderhaar, Fitzgerald honored by IIAC

JT Vonderhaar and Sam Fitzgerald of Coe have been named Performers of the Week by the Iowa Conference.

Vonderhaar, a senior, averaged 21.5 points and 10 rebounds as the Coe men's basketball team won two games last week. He collected 28 points and 12 boards in an 80-73 overtime victory at Central.

Fitzgerald, a freshman from Linn-Mar, was a part of four victories and two second-place showings for the Coe women's swimming team. She won the 100 breaststroke and swam on the winning 200 medley relay in a meet against Iowa Lakes and Lincoln College. She captured the 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle against Luther.
