Hobbs carries Coe women over Loras

Aleena Hobbs had 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Coe College women’s basketball team in a 72-65 win over Loras College on Saturday at Eby Fieldhouse.

Megan Hayes had 18 points, and Mickey Hansche added 10 for the Kohawks (9-4).

Kaitlin Phillips had 15 points and 11 rebounds for Loras (7-6), Carly Goede had 11 points, and Lori Obendorf had 15 rebounds.

Sewera, Harrington lead Coe matmen

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Farai Sewera and Ryan Harrington won all three of their matches for the Coe wrestling team Friday on the opening day of the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The eighth-ranked Kohawks defeated No. 12 Ithaca, 21-12, in the opening round. Coe lost to No. 2 Wartburg in the second round, 31-6, and rebounded with a 29-9 victory over No. 14 Wilkes in the consolation bracket.

Sewera, ranked No. 2 at 165 pounds, trimmed third-ranked Andrew Steiert of Wartburg, 3-2. Harrington, ranked No. 4 at 174 pounds, edged fifth-ranked Brandon Welter of Wartburg, 3-2.

The Kohawks will face No. 6 Wisconsin-La Crosse in the consolation semifinals Saturday.

Morgan Paige joins team in Romania

Morgan Paige has left her job as an assistant coach with the Coe women's basketball team to begin her pro basketball career with a club in Romania.

Paige, who starred at Marion High School and the University of Wisconsin, left Monday for Romania.

Paige scored 1,280 points during her career at Wisconsin and was named third team all-Big Ten. She was a three-time selection on the Academic All-Big Ten squad and graduated from Wisconsin in 2014.

Paige joined the Kohawks this season as an assistant coach. Coe Coach Randi Henderson knew Paige might leave at some point during the season to begin a pro career, but welcomed Paige to the staff and said she was a valuable member of the program.

   

Coe powers way past Simpson

JT Vonderhaar scored 13 points as Coe outscored Simpson 38-22 in the second half en route to a 66-44 win in the Iowa Conference opener for both schools Wednesday night at Eby Fieldhouse.

Matt Dauost added 12 points and Jacob Timm finished with 11 for Coe (7-5, 1-0). Christian Fahey led the Kohawks with nine rebounds.

Dillon Gretzky and Charles Swain paced Simpson (5-7, 0-1) with nine points apiece.

Kohawk women drop Simpson

Coe saw a 10-point halftime lead slip away, then rode the hot hands of Courteney McCrary and Mickey Hansche late in the second half to down Simpson, 75-69, Wednesday night in the Iowa Conference opener at Eby Fieldhouse.

Simpson (10-2, 0-1) came in as the preseason favorite to win the league title.

Coe (8-7, 1-0) got a terrific
performance from McCrary. The former Prairie prep scored a team-high 20 points, including 4-of-4 from 3-point range. Hansche finished with 15. Aleena Hobbs had 14 points and eight rebounds while Jenna Lehman finished with 10 points.

Brittany Hedrick led the Storm with 20 points, including five 3-point baskets. MacKenzie Haupt added 16 points for Simpson.
