Meade leads Coe swimmers to victory

CHICAGO - Lindsay Meade was a triple-winner Saturday as the Coe women's swimming team defeated Illinois Tech, 103-78, in Chicago.

Meade captured the 1000 freestyle and 100 freestyle. She also swam on the triumphant 400 freestyle relay.

Katy Appler (200 free), Kendall Bundy (200 back), Katie King (500 free) and Sam Fitzgerald (200 breaststroke) also won events for the Kohawks.

Tucker Dangremond claimed the 200 breaststroke for the Coe men's team. The Kohawks also claimed the 400 freestyle relay. Illinois Tech won the men's meet, 131-51.

 

Kohawks dumped by Platteville in opener

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The Coe men's basketball team was drubbed by Wisconsin-Platteville, 80-51, in the season opener in Platteville Saturday.

Matt Daoust led the Kohawks with 12 points.

Jim Stocki scored 17 points and Cory Vaassen had 15 for Platteville. The hosts shot 55.4 percent from the floor and were 56.5 on 3-pointers (13 of 23).

Coe faces Wisconsin-Stout Sunday afternoon.

Coe women trimmed by Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The Coe women's basketball team opened the season with a 61-54 loss to Wisconsin-Eau Clair before 426 fans at a tournament in Eau Claire Saturday.

The Kohawks led 27-26 at halftime but could not hang on.

Megan Hayes led Coe with 13 points. Freshman Aleena Hobbs from Cedar Rapids Washington hit two 3-pointers and scored 10 points in her collegiate debut.

Courtney Lewis paced Eau Claire with 18 points.

Sheldon, Horner lead Coe wrestlers

DECORAH - Ryan Sheldon and Donnie Horner paced the Coe wrestling team at the Luther Open in Decorah Saturday.

Sheldon compiled a 3-1 record and finished second at 184 pounds. He lost to Sam Brooks of Iowa, 18-3, in the finals.

Horner went 4-1 and placed third at 197 pounds. He won his first two matches before losing to Nathan Burak of Iowa, 16-7, and then came back with two more victories in the consolation bracket.

Mike Gussarson placed fifth at 133 pounds with a 3-2 record for the Kohawks in the first meet of the season.

Jan Rosenberg went 1-2 at 125 pounds, Luke Kremer was 0-2 at 141, Josh Donkle wsa 2-2 at 149, TJ Morrell was 0-2 at 149, Nik Ramirez was 0-2 at 157, Ryan Donovan went 0-2 at 165, Garrett Kelson was 2-2 at 174, Michael Rathbun was 0-2 at 184, Kirk Owens was 2-2 at 285 and Creighton Fox went 1-2 at 285.

The Kohawks are ranked fifth in NCAA Division III.

 

Kohawks end year in style, 33-13

The Coe football team saved its best performance of the season for the final game of the year.

The Kohawks rolled up 595 yards of total offense and spanked Buena Vista, 33-13, on a cold day at Clark Field with the temperature sitting in the mid-20's.

Josh Rekers passed for a career-best 383 yards and connected with Nick Lenstra for three TD passes, including a sensational one-handed grab in the end zone in the fourth quarter.

Placekicker Brandon Abbas wrote his name into the school record book, Marion grad Colton Storla ran for 111 yards and Coe's defense played a strong all-around game.

The Kohawks finished at 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the Iowa Conference. It was not the type of season they wanted, but they were determined to finish the year on a positive note.
