Coe swimmers sweep Simpson

Katie King, Kendall Bundy, Kenni Sterns, Andy Cheng and Tucker Dangremond were double-winners Friday night as Coe swept Simpson in Iowa Conference swimming meets at the Eby Fieldhouse pool.

King captured the 1000 freestyle and 500 freestyle, Bundy claimed the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke and Sterns won the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle as the Coe women took their meet, 138-79.

Cheng won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke and Dangremond claimed the 200 IM and 100 freestyle as the Kohawks edged Simpson in the men's meet, 105-101.

Lindsay Meade (200 freestyle), Kendallyn Recker (1-meter diving), Sam Fitzgerald (100 butterfly) and Jasmine Deng (3-meter diving) also won events for the Coe women. The Kohawks also captured the 200 medley relay.

Timmy Bosn won the 100 butterfly for the Coe men. The Kohawks also took the 200 freestyle relay.

 

Kohawks fall in 2nd round of NCAAs

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Coe volleyball team lost to No. 7 Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 25-17, 25-21, 25-11, in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament Friday night.

Rachel Schaefer led the Kohawks with 14 kills. Mackenzie Harbaugh collected 25 assists and Alissa Wittenburg had 13 digs.

Coe finished the season with a 29-9 record. The Kohawks made their second trip to the NCAA tournament after winning the Iowa Conference tournament and regular-season titles.

 

Coe tops No.8 team in NCAA tourney

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Rachel Schaefer collected 20 kills Thursday night as Coe upset eighth-ranked St. Thomas, 3-1, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament in St. Paul, Minn.

St. Thomas won the first set on its home floor 25-21, but the Kohawks captured the next three games 25-16, 25-22 and 25-22.

Mackenzie Harbaugh had 39 assists for Coe. Alissa Wittenburg finished with 33 digs.

Brianna Smith had 14 kills, Harbaugh 10 kills and Meghan McClimon 10 kills. Wittenburg contributed 10 assists.

Olivia Glaudel had 10 digs. Rachel Bosworth pitched in with five kills and four blocks. Olivia Leisinger had four blocks.

Coe, making the second trip to the NCAA tournament in school history, raised its record to 29-8.

The Kohawks face Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the second round of the regional tournament Friday at 7 p.m. Cornell meets Northwestern (Minn.) at 4:30 p.m., and the winners will play for the regional title Saturday at 7 p.m.

The regional champion will advance to the quarterfinals of the national tournament in Newport News (Va.) next weekend.

4 Coe soccer players honored

Four members of the Coe women's soccer team have been honored by the Iowa Conference.

Jordan Holmes and Sarah Fathallah have been named first team all-conference. Kelsey Fauser was named to the second team and Katilyn Yanecek received honorable mention.

Holmes is from Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Fathallah from Linn-Mar and Yanecek from Cedar Rapids Prairie.

Young Kohawks eager for new season

There are plenty of new topics of conversation with the Coe women's basketball team this season.

Randi (Peterson) Henderson, the head coach, is a newlywed with a new last name. There are six new freshmen on the team. And former Marion High School and Wisconsin star Morgan Paige has joined the Kohawks as a new assistant coach.

Henderson, who starred for the University of Iowa women's baskeball team, married former UI men's basketball player Duez Henderson in September and changed the name on her office door at Eby Fieldhouse.

The Kohawks graduated six seniors who helped Coe finish 16-11 overall last season and 10-4 in the Iowa Conference, and they've been replaced by a half-dozen talented rookies.
