Coe netters shine at regional meet

ST. PETER, Minn. - The Coe College men's tennis team got off to a good start at the ITA regional tournament Friday in Minnesota.

Brady Anderson and Ryan Hickman reached the Final 16 in singles competition and will be aiming to make the quarterfinals when they play again Saturday morning.

Anderson and Riley Galbraith advanced to the Final 16 in doubles competition and will play again Saturday afternoon.

Anderson drew an opening-round bye Friday, then posted two straight victories. He defeated Matt Bulger of Wisconsin-La Crosse, 6-7, 6-1, 10-3, and stopped Emilio Gomez of Grinnell, 7-5, 6-1.

Hickman also drew an opening-round bye before collecting two victories. He topped Peter Stadum of Wisconsin-La Crosse, 6-1, 6-7, 10-2, and defeated Jordan Verbauwhede of Carthage, 6-2, 6-4.

Anderson and Galbraith drew a first-round bye in doubles before notching an 8-4 victory over a team from Edgewood.

 

Chandler named to NCAA committee

Coe College Director of Athletics John Chandler has been named to the NCAA Football Rules Committee, a four-year term that expires in September 2018.

The mission of the NCAA Football Rules Committee is to govern the playing rules of collegiate football by: Acknowledging the traditions of sport; Soliciting input from various college constituencies; Examining existing regulations and making necessary modifications to create safe, practical, concise and enforceable rules; and influencing the long-term vision and direction of NCAA football.

Chandler is one of 12 members on the committee. The committee is made up coaches, athletic directors and conference commissioners from NCAA Division I, II and III schools.

There are six members from the Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision, while there are three members each from NCAA Division II and III.

Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun is the chair of the committee, while Louisiana-Monroe head coach Todd Berry, Western Illinois head coach Robert Nielson and Big 12 Conference Associate Commissioner Edward Stewart are also members of the committee.

Coe women claim IIAC tennis title

The Coe College women's tennis team claimed its fourth straight Iowa Conference title Thursday by winning two meets at the Clark Racquet Center.

The Kohawks topped Dubuque, 8-1, and blitzed Loras, 9-0, for their 29th and 30th straight victories in league meets.

Amy Sebastian and Tamara Washington won both of their singles matches for Coe.

Gunderson takes 3rd at Simpson golf

INDIANOLA - Coe senior Tyler Gunderson fired a 1-over-par 72 Wednesday to place third at the Simpson Invitational at the Indianola Country Club.

Trent Lindenman of Simpson won the tournament with a 3-under 68 and led Simpson to the title. Coe finished eighth out of eight teams.

Coe women net 28th in row

WAVERLY - Haley Resnick rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles Wednesday as the Coe women's tennis team topped Wartburg, 8-1, in an Iowa Conference meet in Waverly.

The Kohawks (9-0, 5-0) have won 28 straight Iowa Conference meets and can clinch the league crown Thursday at home against Dubuque and Loras.

Amy Sebastian, Jordan Ferree, Laura Birky, Sarah Lasecki and Diannah Watson also won their singles matches for Coe.
