Chilcott fires 68 as Mustangs take lead

Nathan Chilcott shot a 4-under-par 68 Saturday to help Mount Mercy take the first-round lead at the Cropper Golf Classic at Hunters Ridge.

Chilcott has a three-shot edge over seven golfers heading into the final round today.

Mount Mercy leads AIB, 286-290, in the team standings.

Blaine Buhr of Kirkwood fired a 1-under 71 and is tied for second place. The Eagles are in fifth place in the standings.

Tyler Gunderson shot a 4-over 76 for Coe, which is in 21st place out of 22 teams.

Coe women win 2 tennis meets

The Coe women's tennis team raised its record to 4-0 Saturday by whipping Buena Vista and Wisconsin-Oshkosh by identical 8-1 scores at the Clark Racquet Center.

Haley Resnick cruised in both of her matches at No.1 singles for the Kohawks. She blanked Tasha Nelson of Buena Vista, 6-0, 6-0, and dumped Erica Van Riper of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 6-0, 6-1.

Coe falls at No.24 Wheaton, 36-28

WHEATON, Ill. - The Coe College football team fell behind by 31 points in the first half Saturday and dropped its season opener at No.24 Wheaton College, 36-28, before 2,232 fans at McCully Stadium.

The Kohawks rallied behind quarterback Josh Rekers and pulled within 31-20 in the fourth quarter on a 42-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Heitland, but the PAT was blocked and returned by Wheaton College for two points to make it 33-20.

Wheatland kicked a field goal for a 36-20 advantage.

Rekers connected with Nicholas Lenstra with a four-yard touchdown pass with 39 seconds left in the game to make it 36-26, then Rekers found Dan Kopp for a two-point conversion pass for the final scoring.

Mustangs sweep Coe in cross country

PALO - The Mount Mercy cross country teams swept Coe in the 5 Seasons Duel at the Morgan Creek Park Trail in Palo Friday.

Liz Mosbach raced to a 40-second victory in the women's race to help the Mustangs top the Kohawks, 20-41. Mosbach was timed in 18 minutes, 35 seconds for the three-mile course.

Mount Mercy nipped Coe for the men's title, 25-30. Austin Springsteen of Coe captured the four-mile event in 21 minutes, 34 seconds. He nipped Evan Bowman of Mount Mercy by two seconds.

Lake Forest trips Coe women

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Coe College women's soccer team lost to Lake Forest, 3-1, at the AMC Colleges Tournament in St. Paul, Minn., Friday.

Danica Mason scored the only goal for the Kohawks (0-3) when she won a race for the ball and connected on a chip shot from 30 yards.

Lake Forest raised its record to 3-0.
