Rekers, Glenn battle for QB job at Coe

Don't be surprised if you see Coe quarterback Gavin Glenn whisper in his center's ear before the Kohawks run a play in shotgun formation this season.

Glenn, a transfer from Minnesota-Duluth, is batting incumbent Josh Rekers for the starting job in practice and Glenn wants to make sure there are no problems with the snap.

Glenn stands 6-feet tall, but Rekers is a strapping 6-foot-6.

"Sometimes I go up to the center before the play and tell him I'm the shorter quarterback so I don't get a ball over my head," Glenn claimed during Media Day activities Monday at Clark Field.

Coe Coach Steve Staker has no trouble telling them apart, but he's having a little trouble separating them on the depth chart. That's good news, because both quarterbacks have looked good in practice.

Timmons retires as Coe softball coach

Bob Timmons has retired as the softball coach at Coe College, the school announced Wednesday.

Diane Meyer, a long-time assistant coach with the Kohawks and a former player at Coe, will succeed Timmons as head coach.

Timmons retires as one of the most successful coaches in the history of NCAA Division III softball. With a career record of 927-366, he leaves with the second-most wins in NCAA Division III history and is one of just three coaches in the division with more than 900 career wins.

His 552 wins in 17 seasons at Coe are the most in school history.

“It wasn't an easy decision to make, but I felt it was the right time," said Timmons. "I look forward to spending a lot of time with my friends and family and doing a little bit more hunting, fishing, golfing and anything else that just sounds like fun."

Coe advanced to the NCAA Regional Championships in 11 of his 17 seasons, including trips to the NCAA Division III National Championship Series in 2006 and 2009.

The 2009 squad finished second in the country, the highest finish of any team in Coe College athletics history. A four-time Iowa Conference Coach of the Year, Timmons led the Kohawks to four Iowa Conference titles. During his tenure, Coe had nine Iowa Conference MVPs and nine NFCA All-Americans.

“We appreciate the 17 years that Coach Timmons invested into Coe College and the Kohawk softball program,” said Coe athletic director John Chandler. “Bob took the program to new heights, including two trips to the NCAA D-III Championship as part of the eight best teams in the nation.

"Thanks to Coach Timmons, the Kohawk softball program is respected across the country. As we move forward I am confident Coach Meyer will continue to build on the success we have enjoyed over the past 17 years.”

A 1985 Coe graduate, Meyer has spent the last 12 years as an assistant coach for the Kohawks. A four-time All-Midwest Conference selection, Meyer was a team captain her final two years as a Kohawk. She was inducted into the Coe Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.

Diehl named Coe women's tennis coach

Coe College Director of Athletics John Chandler has announced the hiring of Kris Diehl as the new head coach of the Kohawk women’s tennis program.

Diehl takes over for Eric Rodgers, who will focus on coaching the men’s program.

A graduate of Northern Illinois University, Diehl came to Coe in the spring of 2010 as an assistant men’s and women’s coach. The Iowa City native was named the Most Valuable Player for the Huskies her sophomore season.

As a junior, she posted a team-best 17 doubles wins and 15 singles victories as she earned the Coaches Award. She was also a member of the Northern Illinois soccer team her senior season, earning a varsity letter in both sports.

“We are pleased to have someone with the background that Kris has leading our program,” Chandler said. “By bringing in Kris to coach the women’s team, it will allow both her and Coach Rodgers to focus on one team apiece. This was the next logical move as the Kohawks continue to compete on the regional and national stage.”

Coe's Alger takes 5th at NCAA discus

DELAWARE, Ohio – Coe sophomore Melissa Alger finished fifth in the women’s discus throw at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships Saturday to become an All-American.

Alger broke her own school record in the process with a toss of 150 feet, 8 inches, breaking her old mark of 149-9 1/2.

Alger became the first Kohawk to earn All-American honors in the Outdoor National Championships since Keelie Finnel finished second in the 800-meter run in 2012.

Alger is the first Coe female to earn All-American honors as a discus thrower since Ann Gramkow claimed sixth in 2003.
