Kohawks net win in NCAA opener

ST. LOUIS - The Coe College men's tennis team defeated Earlham, 5-2, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament in St. Louis Friday.

The Kohawks (25-7) will face second-round Washington University in the second round Saturday at 9 a.m.

Riley Galbraith, Sean Stokstad, Alex Bernt and Michael Janssen won their singles matches for Coe. Stokstad and Zack Decker picked up a crucial point for the Kohawks at No. 3 doubles.

Noah Sprinkel, ranked 21st in the country, had a 6-4, 4-6, 4-3 lead at No. 1 singles for Coe, but the match was not finished after the Kohawks clinched the victory with Stokstad's triumph at No. 4 singles.

Earlham took a 2-1 lead in the doubles competition, but Coe won all four of the finished singles matches.

Kohawks ripped by Central, 12-0

The Coe baseball team had problems with its pitching, hitting and defense Thursday in the opening round of the Iowa Conference baseball tournament Thursday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The unhappy result was a 12-0 loss to Central College in seven innings.

The Kohawks (15-23) will face Simpson (20-21) in a loser's bracket elimination game Friday at 10 a.m. at the stadium.

Connor Alberhasky was raked for nine hits and eight runs (seven earned) in 2.1 innings. Coe collected only five hits and committed three errors.

Central raised its record to 26-14.

Coe women blanked by Grinnell

ST. LOUIS - The Coe College women's tennis team was shut out by Grinnell, 5-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament in St. Louis Thursday.

The Kohawks sported a 4-0 record in the first round of previous NCAA tournaments, but Thursday's loss spoiled that perfect mark and ended their 2014 season with a 19-6 record.

Grinnell (17-7) swept all three doubles matches and the meet ended when the Pioneers collected two points in singles. The other four singles matches were left unfinished.

Kohawks face Central in IIAC tourney

Coe has been seeded No.6 and will face Central College in the opening round of the Iowa Conference baseball tournament Thursday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Coe finished with an 11-17 record in the league this season and enters the tournament at 15-22 overall. Central, which is seeded No.3, went 17-11 inthe Iowa Conference and is 25-14 overall.

Loras and Simpson will meet in the opening round Friday at 1 p.m. at  Daniels Park.

If Coe defeats Central, it will play Wartburg at 4 p.m. at the stadium. If the Kohawks lose to Central, they will play Friday at 10 a.m. at the stadium.
