Hobbs sparks Coe women by Central

PELLA - Aleena Hobbs collected 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists Saturday as the Coe women's basketball team trimmed Central, 66-61, in an Iowa Conference game at Kuyper Gymnasium in Pella.

It was the 10th time this season that Hobbs has scored at least 20 points for the Kohawks (13-6, 4-4).

Coe trailed 61-60 entering the final minute Saturday. Hobbs made a layup, got fouled and finished the three-point play to give the Kohawks a 63-61 edge with 43 seconds to go.

Hobbs then stole the ball, got fouled and hit two more free throws for a 65-61 lead with 31 seconds remaining. Central (4-15, 1-7) committed two more turnovers and Courteney McCrary made one free throw for Coe to finish the scoring with five seconds left.

Mickey Hansche and Jenna Lehman both made four 3-pointers and scored 12 points for the Kohawks.

Claire Marburger poured in 27 points for Central.

Coe men flattened by Central, 84-63

PELLA - Trashawn Boyd scored 20 points Saturday afternoon as Central dunked Coe, 84-63, in an Iowa Conference men's basketball game at Kuyper Gymnasium in Pella.

Colby Taylor had 16 points for Central (13-6, 4-4), Austin Glawe had 14 and Tate Handsaker added 12. Pete Walker grabbed 11 rebounds.

Matt Meyer scored 15 points for Coe (7-12, 2-6). Marshall Shedeck added 14 points.

Kohawks win 3 events at Platteville track

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Track athletes from Coe College won three titles at the Wisconsin-Platteville meet Saturday in Wisconsin.

Erik Franklin captured the 200 dash in 22.77 seconds. Mareena Franke won the women's 3000 in 11:34.28. And the Kohawks claimed the men's distance medley in 10:50.31 with Ryan Izer, Dray Schreiber, Ben Nelson and Austin Springsteen.

No team scores were kept.

   

Okamoto shines for Coe swimmers

Ayaka Okamoto of Coe won two individual events and swam on the victorious 200 medley relay Saturday in a dual meet against Luther at the Coe pool.

Okamoto captured the 200 IM in the third-fastest time in school history (2:16.26) and also claimed the 100 backstroke (58.75). She joined Sam Fitzgerald, Alanna Thompson and Katy Appler on the medley relay (1:53.49).

Fitzgerald won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.93).

Corbin Faidley had a good day for the Coe men's team with victories in the 500 freestyle (4:53.67) and the 200 freestyle (1:50.74). His time in the 500 free was the second-best in school history.

Justin Sauter won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving titles. Tucker Dangremond took the 100 breaststroke (1:02.74).

Luther won the women's meet, 163-60, and also captured the men's competition, 134-73.

 

No.6 Chicago tops Coe men in tennis

The sixth-ranked University of Chicago men's tennis team whipped Coe, 14-1, in an indoor meet at the Clark Racquet Center Saturday.

The match was played in an experimental 10 Singles/5 Doubles format.

Alex Bernt and Nate Ackert won their match for Coe at No. 4 doubles.
