Coe freshmen capture sprint medley

DECORAH —  Coe freshmen Erik Franklin, Clayton Birkes, Anton Jones and Beau Freeborn won the 1600 sprint medley at the Norse Relays in Decorah on Saturday.

Brett Mitchelmore won the javelin for the Kohawks. Alex Deeds placed second in the shot put, and the 4x1600 relay team also placed second.

The Coe men collected third-place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The Kohawks placed fourth out of six teams in the men's standings.

The Coe women got second-place showings from Laura Bybee in the pole vault, Kirstin Franklin the triple jump, Melissa Alger in the discus and Ashley Nemechek in the javelin. The sprint medley placed third.

The Coe women finished fifth out of six teams in the standings.

Luther captured the men's and women's overall titles.

Coe netters fall to Chicago, Case

CHICAGO —  The Coe men's tennis lost to a pair of nationally ranked opponents in Chicago on Saturday.

The Kohawks were defeated by No.17 University of Chicago, 7-2, and fell to No.10 Case Western Reserve, 8-1.

Ryan Hickman and Sean Stokstad won their singles matches against Chicago. Stokstad also won his match against Case Western Reserve.

Coe women lose to ranked foes

CHICAGO — The Coe College women's tennis team had a tough day in Chicago on Saturday against a pair of ranked opponents.

The Kohawks lost to No.12 University of Chicago, 9-0, and fell to No.23 Case Western Reserve, 7-1.

Tai Lucero and Diannah Watson collected a point for the Kohawks with a 9-7 victory at No.2 doubles against Case Western Reserve.

Coe fell to 16-5 for the season.

Coe's Crain leads at Hunters Ridge

Chelsea Crain of Coe College shot a 12-over-par 84 Saturday to take the lead after 18 holes of the Mount Mercy Spring Invitational at Hunters Ridge Golf Course.

Mount Mercy took the first-round lead at 353. Coe stood in fifth place out of nine teams at 385.

Coe: Chelsea Crain 84, Amber Suhr 95, Bethany Lehman 102, Chloe Crain 104, Tarissa Hagenow 108, Kate Boland 109.

Coe golfers place 11th at Spring Invy

WAVERLY — Mount Mercy University fired a 286 team total Saturday at Centennial Oaks Golf Course to win the Wartburg Spring Invitational by 18 strokes over Simpson College and Central College.

Coe College finished 11th out of 16 teams. Mitch Moon led the Kohawks with a 36-hole score of 11-over-par 155.

The Mount Mercy Mustangs were led by medalist Ryan Schrimper, who fired a 5-under 67 Saturday en route to a 1-under 143 total. Mount Mercy's Jamie Booth and Simpson's Trent Lindenman finished two shots back at 145. Luther's Tobi Kohl and Central's Adam Squires (both 146) rounded out the top five.

Coe: Mitch Moon 75-80=155, Tyler Gunderson 78-79=157, Derek Nicholson 80-87=167, Kyle Boardman 84-87=171, Seth Inman 83-92=175, Zach Stafford 89-87=176, Anthony Worden 92-94=186.
