Mount Mercy wins Early Bird Classic

Allyson Wertz and Casey Noble tied for second in the individual standings Sunday to help the Mount Mercy women's golf team claim top honors at the Early Bird Classic at Hunters Ridge.

Bailey Schmidt of Viterbo won the 18-hole tournament at 2-over-par 74. Wertz and Noble finished at 6-over 78.

Mount Mercy finished with a team score of 324, good for a 17-shot victory over Viterbo.

Mustang spikers finish 4-0 in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Alyssa Weldon collected 26 kills and Kayla Daggett had 61 assists Saturday as the Mount Mercy volleyball team swept both of its matches on the final day of the KCAC Fall Fling in Hutchinson, Kan.

Daggett had 30 assists and four aces as the Mustangs blanked Avila, 25-20, 25-15, 25-17. She then had 31 assists and five digs in a 25-19, 25-14, 25-15 conquest of Kansas Wesleyan.

Mount Mercy won all four of its matches at the KCAC Fall Fling to begin the 2019 campaign.

Daggett steers Mustangs to wins

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Kayla Daggett rolled up 102 assists Friday to help  the Mount Mercy women's volleyball team open the season with a pair of  tight victories at the KCAC Challenge in Hutchinson, Kan.

Daggett accumulated 55 assists as the Mustangs topped Friends, 23-25,  25-18, 24-26, 25-17, 15-10, in a five-set thriller. She then had 47  assists as the Mustangs defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan, 25-23, 24-26,  25-15, 18-25, 15-6, in another five-set marathon.

Maddie Bell led Mount Mercy with 16 kills against Friends. Olivia  Makinen and Alyssa Weldon had 13 kills and Torie Alexander had 11.  Weldon had 18 digs, Gabi Delsing 17 and Alexander 13 against Friends.

Mount Mercy drops 2019 soccer openers

Both Mount Mercy soccer teams suffered tight losses in the 2019 season openers at the Plaster Athletic Complex Wednesday.

The Mount Mercy women lost to Briar Cliff, 2-1, and the Mount Mercy  men were trimmed by St. Francis (Ill.), 2-1, in overtime.

Carly Walker scored for the Mustang women in the first half for a 1-0  lead with an assist from Abby Estabrook. Briar Cliff scored twice in  the second half for the victory. Sarah Johnson made seven saves for Mount Mercy.

Mount Mercy sets youth basketball camps

Mount Mercy University will be hosting youth basketball camps for boys and girls this summer at the Hennessey Recreation Center on campus.

The first session for the boys basketball camps will be held July 22-25 and the second session will be July 29-Aug. 1, from 8:30 to 3:30 p.m. each day. The cost is $175 per session, with discounts for multiple sessions and siblings. Lunch is not included.

The first session for the girls basketball camps will be held July 8-12 and the second session will be July 15-18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The cost is $160 per session, with a discount for siblings. Lunch is not included.
