Mount Mercy softball sweeps Clarke

DUBUQUE - The Mount Mercy softball team displayed some effective  pitching and timely hitting and swept a Heart of America Conference  doubleheader from Clarke, 4-1 and 4-2 in eight innings, Tuesday in  Dubuque.

The twin-killing lifted the Mustangs to 26-18 overall and 17-13 in the  conference. Clarke fell to 9-26 overall and 7-23 in the league.

Anna Stenberg and Jessica Miller had two hits for Mount Mercy in the  4-1 victory in the opener. Payton Bruner hit a solo home run. Tawny  Menster (10-3) pitched a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits.

Stenberg, Jolona Shield and Emily Oler had two hits in the 4-2 triumph  in the nightcap. Menster and Oler socked solo homers. Jayna Witzany  (10-7) picked up the victory in relief of Madelyn Irwin.

Mustang golfers 2nd at Heart tourney

LAKE OZARK, Mo. - The Mount Mercy women's golf team is sitting in  second place at the Heart of America Conference tournament, but the  Mustangs have a lot of catching up to do.

The Mustangs trail William Penn by 24 strokes following the first  round of the 54-hole tournament Tuesday at the Osage National Golf  Club. The 10-team event continues Wednesday and Thursday.

All five of Mount Mercy's golfers are in the top-12 of the individual  standings after 18 holes. Cheyenne Broquard leads the way in sixth  place with an 8-over-par 80.

Clarke trips Mount Mercy baseball

DUBUQUE - Austin Mettica delivered a two-run double in the bottom of  the ninth inning Saturday to give Clarke a 7-6 victory over Mount  Mercy in a Heart of America Conference baseball game in Dubuque.

Mount Mercy scored in the top of the ninth to take a 6-5 lead, but  Clarke responded in the bottom of the inning for the walk-off victory.

Mount Mercy fell to 22-20 overall and 13-13 in the conference. Clarke  raised its records to 21-17 overall and 16-8 in the league.

Chili Moseley hit a solo home run for the Mustangs. Evan Jackson was  3-for-4 and scored twice. Owen Oreskovich was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Jake Faur also drove in two runs.

Bruner helps Mustangs sweep Peru

Payton Bruner filled her role beautifully in the leadoff spot for the  Mount Mercy softball team Saturday.

Bruner went 4-for-6, scored four runs, collected three RBIs, hit two  triples and had two stolen bases as the Mustangs swept Peru State, 6-5  and 5-3, in a Heart of America Conference doubleheader at Busse Field.

Bruner, the Mount Mercy shortstop, went 2-for-3 with two runs, two  RBIs and two stolen bases in the 6-5 victory in the opener. Tawny  Menster was 2-for-3 and pitched a complete game for the win. Jessica  Miller and Michelle Mack also had two hits in the first game.

Bruner went 2-for-3 with two runs, two triples and an RBI in the 5-3  victory in Game 2. Sydney Robertson was 2-for-2. Jayna Witzany (9-7)  pitched four shutout innings in relief for the victory, allowing just  two hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Mount Mercy baseball sweeps Clarke

The Mount Mercy baseball team swept a Heart of America Conference  doubleheader from Clarke University, 4-3 and 11-4, Friday at the  Plaster Athletic Conference.

The sweep lifted the Mustangs to 22-19 overall and 13-12 in the  league. Clarke fell to 20-17 overall and 15-8 in the conference.

Mount Mercy trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning  in the opener. Kobi Candaroma led off with a triple and Corbin Day was  hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and third with one out.

Manny Oluntunde, running for Day, stole second base. Chili Moseley had  an RBI single, driving in Candaroma and chasing Oluntunde to third,  but Moseley was thrown out trying to reach second base.
