Graceland sweeps Mount Mercy softball

The Mount Mercy softball team had a tough day at Busse Field Sunday.

Graceland swept the Mustangs in a Heart of America Conference  doubleheader, 7-3 and 2-1 in 10 innings.

The losses dropped Mount Mercy to 20-13 overall and 13-8 in the  conference. Graceland raised its records to 16-14 overall and 9-10 in  the league.

Jess Heick was 2-for-4 for Mount Mercy in the 7-3 loss in the opener  and scored twice. Jolona Shield drove in two runs. Morgan Braughton  had two hits. Tawny Menster (8-1) suffered her first loss of the season.

Vander Poel, Nickelson star for Mustangs

Kathryn Vander Poel and Luke Nickelson were double-champions for Mount Mercy at the Mustang Open track meet Saturday at the Plaster Athletic Complex.

Vander Poel captured the 800 and 1500 meter runs for Mount Mercy. Nickelson claimed the high jump and long jump for the Mustangs.

Vanessa Cortes won the 5000 meter run, McKenna Johnson took the 3000 meter steeplechase and Jon Anderson won the 5000 meter walk.

The Mount Mercy women's track team finished a tight second in the team standings behind Gustavus Adolphus, 114 to 107. The Mount Mercy men placed fourth. Fourteen teams competed in both divisions.

Strong pitching lifts Mustang baseball

Dylan Campbell and Tanner Lohaus sparkled on the mound Saturday as Mount Mercy swept a non-conference doubleheader from Lincoln College, 4-1 and 6-1, at the Plaster Athletic Complex.

The twin-killing lifted the Mustangs to 19-18 for the campaign.

Campbell (4-4) pitched six innings in the 4-1 victory in the opener, allowing one run on six hits. He struck out three batters and did not walk anyone. Matt Trouten got the final three outs in the seventh for his fifth save.

Lohaus (4-4) picked up where Campbell left off in Game 2. He went the distance and allowed one run on three hits, with 11 strikeouts and one walk.

Mustang ace raises mark to 8-0

Tawny Menster tossed a six-hit shutout Saturday as Mount Mercy blanked 24th-ranked Grand View, 7-0, in the first game of their Heart of America Conference doubleheader at Busse Field.

Grand View won the second game, 3-2. The Vikings also won the completion of a game that was suspended Wednesday in Des Moines, 10-8.

The outcome left Mount Mercy at 20-12 overall and 13-7 in the conference. Grand View raised its records to 27-6 overall and 17-3 in the league.

Menster (8-0) struck out five batters and walked two in the 7-0 victory. Payton Bruner was 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot and scored twice. Jess Heick was 2-for-4 and also scored twice. Audrey Grove drove in two runs.

Yoder's club has triple-header Saturday

DES MOINES - The Mount Mercy and Grand View softball teams played  Wednesday until they could barely see anymore.

Grand View tripped the Mustangs, 6-5, in eight innings in the first  game of their Heart of America Conference doubleheader in Des Moines.

The 24th-ranked Vikings led the second game, 9-7, heading into the  bottom of the third when the contest was suspended due to darkness on  a cold, gray day in Des Moines.

The teams will finish the suspended game this Saturday at 11 a.m. at  Busse Field in Cedar Rapids before they play a regularly scheduled  twinbill that day.
