Vander Poel shines for Mustangs

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Kathryn Vander Poel of Mount Mercy enjoyed a successful day at the Rhodes College Invitational track meet in Memphis Saturday.

Vander Poel finished second in the 800 meter run in 2 minutes, 18.1 seconds and placed third in the mile in 5:15.51.

Andrea Ertz of Mount Mercy placed fifth in the mile in 5:17.33, less than two seconds behind Vander Poel as the Mustangs made a strong showing in the event.

Nickelson takes 2nd in triple jump

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Luke Nickelson of Mount Mercy placed second in the triple jump at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis Friday.

Nickelson, a junior from Nipomo, Calif., was measured at 13.87 meters.

Day 2 of the track meet is Saturday.

 

Mustangs jump into tie for first place

CANTON, Mo. - The Mount Mercy men's volleyball team climbed into a tie  for first place in the Heart of America Conference standings Thursday  night by sweeping Culver-Stockton, 3-0.

The set scores were 26-24, 25-18, 25-15 as the Mustangs widened their  margin in each set.

The 10th-ranked Mustangs and fourth-ranked Grand View Vikings are tied  for the top with 8-1 conference records with one match left in the  league season for both teams. Mount Mercy will finish the Heart  campaign at Clarke University on March 26.

Mount Mercy baseball sweeps Baker

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Mount Mercy baseball team swept a Heart of  America Conference doubleheader Monday from Baker University, 9-3 and  4-3 in 10 innings.

The twin-killing lifted the Mustangs to 6-10 overall and 3-5 in the  conference.

Chili Moseley, Kobi Candaroma and Corbin Day had two hits in the 9-3  victory in Game 1. Tito Berdecia and Day had two RBIs. Moseley and  Michael Perry scored twice.

Jake Faur pitched 6 1/3 strong innings for the Mustangs to collect the  victory in the opener. He allowed three runs on four hits.

Evan Jackson went 4-for-5 for Mount Mercy in the 4-3 victory in the  nightcap. Moseley, Nick Sueppel and Candaroma had three hits. Austin  Hilpipre scored two runs. The Mustangs had 17 hits in the ballgame,  but left 14 runners on base in the 10-inning affair.

Mount Mercy women bowl to nationals

SMYRNA, Tenn. - The Mount Mercy women's bowling team is headed to the ITC national tournament for the second time in three years.

Coach Andy Diercks and the Mustangs finished fourth out of 16 teams at the 2019 Intercollegiate Team Championships sectional qualifier Sunday with a total score of 12,010.

St. Ambrose won the sectional title, followed by Stephen F. Austin State, Indiana Tech and Mount Mercy.

The ITC national tournament will be held in Dayton, Ohio from April 17-20.
