Mustangs spike 2 foes in tourney

ELGIN, Ill. - The Mount Mercy men's volleyball team won both of its  matches at the Judson University Tournament Friday.

The Mustangs took care of Lindenwood University-Belleville, 3-1, with  set scores of 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-17.

Mount Mercy knocked off Lawrence Tech, 3-1, with set scores of 28-30,  25-13, 25-21, 25-17.

Ben Steffen collected 28 kills for the Mustangs Friday, with 18 kills  against Lawrence Tech and 10 kills against Lindenwood. He also had six  blocks against Lindenwood.

Andrew Colantone dished out 85 assists in the two matches, with 49  against Lawrence Tech and 36 against Lindenwood. He had four blocks in  the victory over Lindenwood.

Mustang women fall at Graceland

LAMONI - The Mount Mercy women's basketball team lost to Graceland, 68-49, in a Heart of America Conference game in Lamoni Thursday night.

The Mustangs fell to 5-18 overall and 1-16 in the league. Graceland raised its records to 13-10 overall and 7-10 in the conference.

Aaliyah Brown and Aurianna Hampton scored 11 points apiece for Mount Mercy. Caitlin Sudduth had 14 points for Graceland.

Mustangs rally with 'D' and 19 3's

The Pioneers from MidAmerica Nazarene put on a clinic during the first  half at the Hennessey Recreation Center Saturday.

They hit just about every shot they took. If they missed, they usually  grabbed the offensive rebound and scored again. The Mount Mercy  defenders were typically a step behind.

The Pioneers pounded Mount Mercy on the backboards in the first half,  built a 16-point lead and appeared headed to an easy victory over the  Mustangs.

Mount Mercy Coach Aaron Jennings was not happy.

"We talked at halftime about having some pride," he said. "You can't  get pushed around in a basketball game."

The Mustangs listened and responded.

Mount Mercy stiffened its defense, hit a string of clutch 3-pointers  and rallied to defeat MidAmerica Nazarene, 89-82, in a Heart of  America Conference game.

Mustang track teams win 4 events

DAVENPORT - The Mount Mercy indoor track teams won four events at the Fighting Bee Invitational in Davenport Saturday.

Colton Forster captured the 5,000 meter run (15:18.61) and Jon Anderson took the 3,000 meter walk (13:56.02) for the Mount Mercy men.

Kathryn Vander Poel won the 800 meter run (2:21.79) and Rachel Gadient claimed the pentathlon (3,170 points) for the Mount Mercy women.

The Mount Mercy men finished fifth out of 12 teams. Cameron Steffens  placed second in the 1,000 meter run (2:47.67) and the 4x800 relay  team placed second (8:14.94) with Jacob Blackmon, Forster, Aaron Golding and James Lindstrom. Lindstrom finished fourth in the 5,000  (15:23.59).

No. 4 Nazarene rolls by Mustangs

A long season for the Mount Mercy women's basketball team got a little  longer Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs lost to fourth-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene, 81-48, in a  Heart of America Conference game at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

Mount Mercy shot only 21.7 perfect from the field (15 of 69). The  Mustangs fell to 5-17 overall and 1-15 in the conference.

MidAmerica Nazarene built a 41-point lead in the fourth quarter. The  Pioneers raised their records to 18-3 overall and 15-2 in the  conference.

Aaliyah Brown scored 10 points for Mount Mercy. Audrey Mulumba had  eight points and 12 rebounds.
