Mustang volleyball splits 2 matches

PARKVILLE, Mo. - The Mount Mercy women's volleyball team split its  final two matches at the Park University tournament to finish the  event with a 2-2 record.

The Mustangs defeated Morningside, 25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21, in  their first match Saturday. They were trimmed by Briar Cliff, 22-25,  21-25, 25-14, 25-22, 15-12, after winning the first two sets.

Andrew Colantone collected 38 assists, six digs and four blocks  against Morningside. Julian Armendano had 14 kills and four aces. Ben  Steffen finished with 10 kills and Nikola Stoimenov had eight kills.

Mustangs spike No. 7 Ottawa at tourney

PARKVILLE, Mo. - The Mount Mercy men's volleyball upset seventh-ranked  Ottawa University, 20-25, 25-22, 17-25, 27-25, 15-13, at the Park  University tournament in Missouri Friday.

The Mustangs fell behind 2-1 after the first three sets, then  prevailed in the last two sets with a clutch performance.

Nikola Stoimenov collected 26 kills and three blocks for the Mustangs  against Ottawa. Andrew Colantone contributed 50 aces and nine digs.  Julian Armendano had 13 kills and eight digs.

Mount Mercy lost to fifth-ranked Park University, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23,  25-21, in its other match at the tournament Friday. The Mustangs won  the first set before falling short.

Mustangs fall short at Culver-Stockton

CANTON, Mo. - The Mount Mercy Mustangs lost to a hot-shooting team on  a cold night Thursday.

Mike Johnson poured in 31 points as Culver-Stockton topped the  Mustangs, 97-87, in a Heart of America Conference game.

Three Culver-Stockton players combined to score 73 points with Johnson  netting 31, Mason Vires 22 and Thaddeus Newby 20. Johnson and Newby  canned five 3-pointers.

Culver-Stockton shot 55.9 percent from the floor and was 12 of 17 on  3-pointers for a sizzling 70.6 percent, including an 8 for 8  performance from long distance in the second half.

Antwain Strong led five Mustangs into double figures with 17 points.  Dennis McKinney and Christian Reischauer netted 14 points apiece, Mike  Evans 13 and DJ Johnson 12. Bailey Basala returned to action after  missing four games with a sprained ankle and hit three triples for  nine points.

Mount Mercy women fall to 1-14

CANTON, Mo. - The Mount Mercy women's basketball team returned to full  strength Thursday night, but it wasn't good enough to prevent the  Mustangs from falling to 1-and-14 in conference games this season.

Mount Mercy lost to Culver-Stockton, 81-69, in a Heart of America  contest in Missouri.

Sharice Kawakami, who missed three games due to concussion protocol,  returned to action and scored 19 points in 32 minutes off the bench.  She made 5 of 7 3-pointers.

Brianna Thomas, who missed six games while serving a suspension, also  returned and had six points in 16 minutes off the bench for Mount Mercy.

Mustangs spiked by No. 4 Baptist

ST. LOUIS - The Mount Mercy men's volleyball team was trimmed by  fourth-ranked Missouri Baptist, 25-21, 25-23, 25-19, in St. Louis  Thursday night.

Andrew Colantone collected 26 assists and eight digs for the Mustangs  (1-2). Nikola Stoimenov had 11 kills and three blocks. Strahil  Svilenski had four blocks. Evan Gaskill contributed seven digs.
