Mount Mercy University - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Mount Mercy women taste victory

The Mount Mercy women's basketball team has staged some nice rallies in Heart of America Conference games this season and had a few near-misses, but the Mustangs kept falling short in league outings.

That ended Saturday.

Mount Mercy scored 28 points in the final quarter and defeated Peru State, 72-65, for their first victory in the Heart of America after eight straight defeats.

"It feels good, more-so for the girls than anything," said Coach Micha Mims. "It's been a grind. They've been working hard and their hard work is finally paying off.

"To see it go in the record books as a victory is what really matters for them."

The Mustangs (5-10, 1-8) prevailed despite playing short-handed. Brianna Thomas, the team's leading scorer, did not participate in the game. And Audrey Mulumba, who led Mount Mercy with 16 points Saturday, did not play in the final 6 minutes, 17 seconds due to a leg ailment.

Mustangs climb to 4th place in Heart

Aaron Jennings extended his palms and told his guys to slow it down midway through the second half Wednesday night, but the Mount Mercy coach was not abandoning his high-powered offense in favor of a  methodical brand of basketball.

Mychael Brawner-Henley had just hit a 3-pointer for the Mustangs and  was making just about everything he launched, so Jennings wanted to  run a little offense and find another good shot for a hot shooter.

Sure enough, the Mustangs found Brawner-Henley in a good spot and he  drilled another 3-pointer to justify his coach's approach.

The moment was a snap-shot in another highly entertaining victory for  Mount Mercy, this time a 104-88 conquest of Missouri Valley in a Heart  of America Conference game at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs led by 30 points, 104-74, with 3:41 remaining, so it  hardly mattered that Missouri Valley scored the last 14 points of the  ballgame in mop-up time.

The victory lifted Mount Mercy (9-5) into a four-tie for fourth place  in the conference at 4-4.

Mount Mercy women denied victory

The Mount Mercy women's basketball team had a chance to collect its  first victory in the Heartland Conference Wednesday night, but the  opportunity slipped away in the final seconds.

Mount Mercy lost to Missouri Valley, 63-59, in a tight game at the  Hennessey Recreation Center.

The setback dropped the Mustangs to 0-8 in the conference and 4-10  overall. Missouri Valley raised its records to 4-4 in the league and  5-8 overall

Chelsey Lampe gave Mount Mercy a 57-56 lead with a 3-pointer with 3:34  remaining, but Missouri Valley owned a 61-59 advantage heading into  the final minute.

Brianna Thomas of Mount Mercy missed a shot with a few seconds left  that would have tied the game at 61-61, but the Mustangs corralled the  offensive rebound for a second chance. Anna LeGrand had a good look  for a 3-pointer for a potential 62-61 lead with two seconds left, but  the shot refused to fall for the Mustangs.

Mount Mercy women stung by Bees

DAVENPORT - The Mount Mercy women's basketball team returned to action  after its holiday break Friday night and lost to Saint Ambrose, 82-64, in a non-conference game in Davenport.

The setback left the Mustangs with a 4-and-9 record for the 2018 portion of their campaign.

Brianna Thomas led Mount Mercy with 18 points and was the only Mustang to score in double figures. The Mustangs trailed by 16 points at halftime and drew within 10 points in the second half, but never recovered.

Candace Finnin scored 16 points for the Bees (11-4).

Strong has dream job with Mustangs

Antwain Strong appears to be the happiest guy on the floor for the Mount Mercy men's basketball team, always smiling and laughing and occasionally talking to fans in the stands.

He's got a lot to be happy about.

Strong is an extremely talented point guard who is surrounded by terrific 3-point shooters. In fact, the Mustangs lead the nation in 3-point shooting and Strong ranks fifth in the NAIA in assists.

They did nothing to hurt those numbers Tuesday night.

Mount Mercy popped in 20 pointers - the second-most in school history - and posted a 102-85 victory over Viterbo in a non-conference game at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs set the school record for most 3-pointers in a single game when they tossed in 22 triples in a 107-84 victory at Viterbo in the season opener on Nov. 1.

No wonder Strong is always smiling. He loves being the point guard on a team with great marksmen.
