No.2 Saints top Jeff boys, 5-1

The second-ranked Xavier boys soccer team defeated Jefferson, 5-1, Tuesday in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Xavier.

The Saints raised their record to 5-0.

Nolan Armstrong, Luke Duball, Will Hanigan, Luke Koechner and Connor Ramlo scored goals for Xavier.

Jacob Chiza tallied on a penalty kick for Jefferson.

 

Prairie, Jeff girls win in Mt. Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Cedar Rapids Prairie girls track team won two events and finished third in the team standings at the Mount Pleasant Relays Tuesday.

Kirstin Skriver captured the 400 in 1:02.84 for Prairie. The Hawks also won the sprint medley in 1:58.30 with Morgan Lewis, Hannah Roltgen, Jenna Ross and Skriver.

The Jefferson J-Hawks won three events and finished fourth out of eight teams in the standings.

Sarah Hanna claimed the 1500 for the J-Hawks in 5:05.64. Jefferson also won the 4x200 relay and the distance medley.

No.2 Saints blank J-Hawks in soccer

Addy Hoffman scored the only goal in the game Tuesday as the second-ranked Xavier Saints shut-out Jefferson, 1-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls soccer match on Jefferson's home field.

Josie Fuhrman collected an assist on Hoffman's goal.

The Saints dominated the match and had 14 shots on goal, although only one found the net. Jefferson was not credited with any shots on goal.

   

Hargens leads Kennedy golfers at Ellis

Sierra Hargens of Kennedy fired a 6-over-par 42 Tuesday at Ellis Park to share medalist honors in a Mississippi Valley Conference quadrangular meet.

Lourdes Allen de Salazar of Hempstead also shot a 42, leading her team to the title.

1. Hempstead 182, 2. Kennedy 188, 3. Jefferson 244, Waterloo East 263.

Pritts helps Prairie boot Jefferson

Paige Pritts scored two goals Thursday as Prairie defeated Jefferson, 3-1, in a Mississippi Valley Conference soccer match at Prairie.

Hannah Kousheh collected the third goal for Prairie. Adelaide Bayne had an assist for the Hawks.

Jefferson scored on an own-goal.

   

Coker sparks Kennedy to track title

DUBUQUE - Jackson Coker uncorked a throw of 170 feet, 11 inches in the discus Thursday to help the Kennedy Cougars claim top honors at the Harley Sweet Invitational in Dubuque.

Coker's toss was the second-longest in the state this year.

Kennedy won the championship with 129 points. Washington placed third, Jefferson was fifth and Prairie finished sixth in the 11-team field.

Willie Rhoads won the high jump for the Cougars at 6 feet, 5 inches.

No.13 Prairie boys boot J-Hawks

Steve Fritz scored both goals Thursday as the 13th-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie soccer team shut out Jefferson, 2-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at the Kingston soccer complex.

Alec Balta pitched a shutout in goal for Prairie. Seth Rinderknecht had an assist in the game.

Prairie raised its record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

   

Wash girls claim MVC golf meet

Brett Visser shot a 5-over-par 41 Thursday to help the Washington girls golf team win a Mississippi Valley Conference quadrangular meet at Twin Pines.

Sarah Overton of Iowa City High claimed medalist honors with a 1-over 37. Visser was the runnerup.

Slagle wins match for J-Hawk girls

Maddie Slagle of Jefferson defeated Abby Walling of Iowa City West, 10-5, at No. 4 singles Thursday in their Mississippi Valley Conference match at Jefferson.

Iowa City West won the meet, 8-1.

IOWA CITY - The second-ranked Iowa City West boys tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Cedar Rapids Jefferson Thursday in Iowa City.

Jiung Jung of Iowa City West defeated Alex Tvedte, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.
