Wensel bursts onto scene with Linn-Mar

Now she's a freshman at Linn-Mar and is already a smash hit on a much bigger stage.

Wensel set a meet record in the 400 meter dash and helped Linn-Mar set another mark in the 4x800 relay as the Lions captured top honors at the 29th Annual J-Hawk Relays at Kingston Stadium.

Jasmine Blue wins Metro Spotlight Award

Jasmine Blue of Cedar Rapids Jefferson is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Blue, a junior, is one of the top sprinters in the state for the Jefferson track team. Her accomplishments began as a freshman when she helped the J-Hawks win the 4x200 relay at the 2013 state meet with an all-time best clocking. She's gotten even faster since then.

Blue helped Jefferson defend its state title in the 4x200 relay last year. She also helped the J-Hawks win the sprint medley at the state meet and place second in the 4x100 relay. Individually, she finished third in the 100 meter dash at state.

Bokoyo wins sprints for J-Hawks

Merje' Bokoyo has arrived at Cedar Rapids Jefferson this year with speed.

Bokoyo, a transfer student from Galesburg, Ill., captured the 100 and 200 meter dashes at the John Ask Relays Saturday on a cool, sunny day at Kingston Stadium.

Bokoyo claimed the 100 meter dash in a hand-held time of 10.92 seconds, which Jefferson Coach Ron Tower said would translate to about a 11.15 electronic clocking.

"That's a good time. No question, this early, in the cold," said Tower.

Bokoyo helped Galesburg finished third in the 4x100 relay and sixth in the 4x200 relay at the Class 2A state meet in Illinois last year. Tower said Bokoyo is originally from the Congo in Africa.
