Hempstead boys edge Xavier in OT

The Xavier boys basketball team let a 12-point halftime lead slip away and lost to ninth-ranked Dubuque Hempstead 51-48 in overtime Tuesday at Xavier.

The Saints led 16-10 after the first quarter and 32-20 at halftime before the Mustangs fought back with a 12-4 third-quarter run.

The score was tied 44-44 at the end of the regulation, and Hempstead took control in the overtime period to avoid the upset.

Michael Mims, had 17 points for Xavier (4-5), which was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.

Avery Butler had 18 points for Hempstead (7-1), which shot 9-of-10 from the line.

Linn-Mar swimmers sink Jefferson

The Linn-Mar boys swimming team battered Jefferson 126-38 Tuesday at Jefferson.

Matt Peng and Zach Hendricks each won two events for the Lions. Peng took first place in the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 50.10 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 58.44. Hendricks won the 200 individual medley in 2:13.15 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.02.

Reid Snell won the 50 freestyle in 23.80 for Linn-Mar, Justin Arebaugh won the 100 butterfly in 57.09, Calvin Greve won the 100 freestyle in 49.93, and the Lions won the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.

Max McChesney won the 500 freestyle in 5:29.92 for the J-Hawks.

Jefferson boys earn first win

MAQUOKETA – The Jefferson boys basketball team earned its first win of the season, beat Maquoketa 55-41 Saturday.

Brock Hunt had 12 points for the J-Hawks (1-8), Trey McCauley had 10 points, and Adam Van Oort added nine.

Jon Ernst had 12 points for Maquoketa (0-10).

Baker wins title for Jefferson

Brenden Baker won the 113-pound title to lead the Jefferson wrestling team to sixth place with 141 points at the Jerry Eckenrod Invitational on Saturday at Van Horne.

Union won the tournament with 245 points.

Baker won a 5-4 decision over Derek Holschlag of Union for first place at 113. Kyle Briggs was runner-up at 132 pounds for the J-Hawks.

Will Foreman was third at 113 for Washington, which finished 16th with 16 points.

Konigsmark not enough for Jefferson boys

DUBUQUE – Tyler Konigsmark had 17 points to lead the Jefferson boys basketball team in a 54-43 loss to Dubuque Senior on Friday.

Luke McDonnell had 15 points for the Rams (6-2).

Slow start dooms Jefferson girls

The Jefferson girls basketball team fell behind 20-6 in the first quarter and couldn’t recover in a 55-45 loss to Dubuque Senior on Friday at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks mounted a comeback with a 22-11 run in the second quarter, but the Rams pulled away in the second half.

Kylie Wise had 14 points for Jefferson (5-6), and Kennedy Dighton had eight points and seven rebounds.

Makenzie Williams had 16 points for Dubuque Senior (6-5).

Jefferson girls bowl over Xavier

Holly Miller had 349 series to lead the Jefferson girls bowling team to a 2,449 to 2,259 win over Xavier on Friday at May City Bowl.

Tanya Zaugg led all scorers with a 387 series for the Saints.

Xavier boys stop Jefferson in MVC showdown

The Xavier boys bowling team edged Jefferson 3,243 to 3,203 in a meeting of undefeated teams and Mississippi Valley Conference divisional leaders Friday at May City Bowl.

Jefferson held a one-pin lead of 2,084 to 2,083 entering the Baker rounds, when Xavier pulled away 1,159 to 1,119.

Brett Young had a 459 series and Caleb Miller had a high game of 245 to lead the Saints, who improved to 6-0.

Chaise Donner had a 235 game and a 452 series for the J-Hawks (5-1).

Xavier (3,243): Brett Young 224-235=459, Caleb Miller 245-206=451, Jacob Fulton 204-214=418, Charlie Hart 236-162=398, Cameron Zaugg 198-159=357, Michael Baenzow 156-117=273.

J-Hawks rally to stick Hempstead

Brenden Baker and Joseph Sibomana collected pins in the final two matches Thursday night as the Jefferson J-Hawks rallied to top Dubuque Hempstead, 35-27, in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual meet at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks trailed 27-23 entering the last two bouts. Baker pinned his man at 113 pounds in 1:48 to give Jefferson a 29-27 lead, then Sibomana followed with a pin at 120 pounds in 1:16 to clinch the victory.

Kelly May (195) also had a pin for Jefferson. Tavian Rashed (152) posted a technical fall. Kyle Briggs (138), Luke Sedlacek (160) and Nick Dreckman (182) won major decisions for the J-Hawks.

McChesney powers J-Hawks

IOWA CITY – Max McChesney won two individual events and swam on a winning relay to lead the Jefferson boys swimming team to an 89-80 win over Iowa City High on Tuesday at the Mercer Park Aquatic Center.

McChesney won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles in 1 minute, 59.18 seconds and 5:24.06, respectively. He also led off the winning 400 freestyle relay team.

Noah Hoogestratt also won the 100 butterfly (1:03.17) for the J-Hawks, Paul Hummell won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.38), and the 200 medley relay team won.
