Ollinger powers Jeff past Wash

Amanda Ollinger had 23 kills and 10 digs Tuesday night as Jefferson swept Washington, 25-17, 25-9, 25-18, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match at Washington.

Ollinger finished with a kill efficiency rating of .724.

Maddie Slagle contributed nine kills and seven digs for the J-Hawks. Makenzie Tomkins had eight kills.

Hannah Carter had five kills and three blocks. Lexi Moore made 21 assists and Avery Guy had 18 assists and two aces.

Murdock's ace sparks Cougars to district title

The free drinks are on Cole Murdock.

Murdock fired a hole-in-one and claimed medalist honors Tuesday at Hunters Ridge as the Kennedy Cougars won their eighth straight district golf title.

Kennedy will compete for the state title this Friday and Saturday at the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.

Murdock aced the 16th hole at Hunters Ridge with a pitching wedge. The ball hit the bottom of the flag and dropped into the cup.

Murdock knew he hit a good shot, but did not realize the ball was in the hole.

"I've never had a hole-in-one, so I guess I've never really seen what it looks like going in from the distance," he said. "When I heard it hit the flag I was kind of looking around to see where it went."

Thompson, Langel spark Jeff swimmers

Josie Thompson and Taylor Langel were triple-winners Tuesday night as Jefferson trimmed Iowa City High, 94-82, in a Mississippi Valley Conference swim meet at Jefferson.

Thompson claimed the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly and swam on the triumphant 200 freestyle relay.

Langel captured the 100 freestyle and swam on the victorious 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

J-Hawks win 4 matches in Waverly

WAVERLY - The Jefferson J-Hawks compiled a 4-2 record at the Waverly-Shell Rock volleyball tournament Saturday in Waverly.

The J-Hawks topped Dyersville Beckman, 20-25, 25-22, 15-10, to win the playoffs in the Silver bracket.

Jefferson also defeated Mason City (21-5, 21-19), Waverly-Shell Rock (21-14, 21-18) and Union-LaPorte City (25-21, 25-19) during the day.

The J-Hawks lost to Solon (21-19, 21-15) and Nevada (21-12, 9-21, 15-10).

Amanda Ollinger collected 64 kills in the tournament and had an impressive kill efficiency rating of .486. She also had six blocks.

Maddie Slagle finished with 34 kills and 29 digs. Makenzie Tomkins had 22 kills.

Keke Pledge contributed 34 digs. Avery Guy had 56 assists and Lexi Moorer had 51 assists. Kristen Naber had six blocks and Hannah Carter had five blocks.

Cougars take 3rd at CF swim meet

CEDAR FALLS - The Kennedy Cougars gave Cedar Falls and Waukesha South a good battle at the Marcussen Invitational swimming meet in Cedar Falls Saturday before settling for third place in the 11-team tournament.

Cedar Falls won the title with 458 points, following closely by Waukesha South (446) and Kennedy (444.5).

Washington finished in ninth place and Jefferson was 11th.

Kennedy piled up points in the diving competition with Courtney Fisher winning the event, Jayden Lovell placing second and Carolyn Simon taking fourth.

Kirsten Siebenga placed second in the 50 free and Sam Jacobsen took second in the 100 backstroke for Kennedy. The Cougars placed third in the 400 freestyle relay with Jacobsen, Maddie Bagby, Darby Manternach and Lydia Yang.

Washington and Jefferson did not have anyone finish in the top-six in any event.

Hanna paces J-Hawks in Iowa City

IOWA CITY - Sarah Hanna of Jefferson placed seventh at the Bud Williams Invitational cross country meet at the University of Iowa Thursday.

The Jefferson girls finished third out of four teams.

Nate Homan of Jefferson placed 16th in the boys race. The J-Hawks finished fifth out of six teams.

Cedar Falls too tough for J-Hawks

CEDAR FALLS - Nobody has to tell Brian Webb about the Cedar Falls Tigers and how good they are year after year.

Webb played his high school football at Cedar Falls and he coached for a year at his alma mater, so he knew exactly what to expect from the Tigers in the UNI-Dome Thursday night.

As it turned out, it was not good for Webb and his Jefferson J-Hawks.

Cedar Falls scored touchdowns on its first five possessions and raced by the J-Hawks, 35-17, in a Class 4A district game.

"From the day I left in '98 to what it is now - probably 15 years - their D-ends are all the same, their fullbacks are all the same, their line is all the same. It's just cookie-cutter," said Webb.

"What a great way to build a program, when you have cookie-cutter kids every year to replace the old ones. They're a good team."

Hall of Fame Coach Pat Mitchell retired at Cedar Falls after the 2013 season due to health reasons, but Brad Remmert - Mitchell's co-head coach for many years - succeeded his mentor and has led the Tigers to a 5-1 start this year.
