No. 7 Cougars roll by North Scott

PDF

The Cardiac Cougars gave their hearts and nerves a rest Friday night.

Nick Duehr passed for four touchdowns and No. 7 Kennedy held North Scott to 145 yards of total offense in a 42-0 cakewalk in a Class 4A non-district game at Kingston Stadium.

Shaun Beyer caught three TD passes from Duehr, Tyler Dralle rushed for 149 yards and the Cougars collected four turnovers, including three by handyman Austin Coates.

Kennedy (3-0) posted a pair of heart-stomping victories in the first two weeks of the season against Iowa City West (34-31) and Washington (28-24), but the Cougars had a chance to relax against North Scott (0-3) on homecoming.

"I'm very happy with the way we came out and played on both sides of the ball," coach Brian White said. "It was a total game for us tonight.

"They just played well, all over the place. Nick Duehr played well, Beyer played well, obviously our offensive line played well, Tyler Dralle had tough yards tonight. And our defense -- wow."

Duehr, a junior quarterback, hit 11 of 16 passes for 194 yards and the four scores. Beyer snared seven of those passes for 120 yards, with TD catches of 13, 27 and 18 yards.

Beyer stands 6-foot-5 and is a terrific leaper, having cleared 6-foot-7 in the high jump at the Class 4A state track meet this spring. Duehr loves throwing the ball to big No. 2 down the field.

"He makes it way too easy on me," Duehr said. "I throw that ball up and I know he's going to get it. Coaches tell me to throw it high enough so he can go up and get it."

Beyer is happy to oblige.

"Coach tells Nick, put it up where only I can get it. And that's what he's doing," Beyer said. "He's throwing some really good passes right now. I can't complain at all."

Beyer has committed to North Dakota State as a tight end, but Iowa and Iowa State are still following him and he'll be Iowa State's guest at the big game against the Hawkeyes on Saturday in Ames.

Kennedy rolled up 469 yards of total offense, with 256 on the ground and 213 through the air. The Cougars collected 26 first downs, compared to six for North Scott.

Beyer switched to wildcat quarterback in the third quarter, a weapon the Cougars like to use to confound the defense. He rushed four times for 32 yards and completed both of his passes for 14 yards.

Coates had a big game for Kennedy with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Duehr on offense and three turnovers on defense. He intercepted two passes and stole the ball from a North Scott receiver after the Lancers completed a short pass.

"He was holding it loose, so I just went I got it," Coates said. "It was a lot of fun out there tonight."

Duehr has looked good for Kennedy all season with his passing, leadership and running.

"I'll tell you what, that kid has such a huge upside," White said. "He's easy to coach, and he wants to be coached. He takes in anything you say to him.

"Even when he doesn't do things right, he knows right away. He's not defensive about it. And he's dynamic. Not only can he throw the ball -- he's got a great arm -- but he can run, too. That opens up a lot for us."

Tyler Kadolph, Kennedy's backup quarterback, threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Todd Gusta to finish the scoring, giving the Cougars five touchdown passes. Dralle scored the other touchdown on a 3-yard run. Alex Stone kicked all six PATs.

Kennedy has scored 34, 28 and 42 points in its three games this season.

"We have weapons all over the field," Duehr said. "Offense, defense, anywhere. It's going to be hard for us to get beat. Let's keep it rolling."

Kennedy visits Pleasant Valley next Friday for its first game away from Kingston Stadium.
