Wiedemeier rolls Cougars past Lions

Amanda Wiedemeier was red-hot on the lanes again Thursday, rolling games of 204 and 279 for a 483 series that sent Kennedy past Linn-Mar, 2729-2527, in girls bowling at Cedar Rapids Bowl.

Wiedemeier's series total was 90 pins better than the nearest competitor.

Brooke McMorran rolled a 393 series to lead Linn-Mar. McKenzie Routhe's 211 was high game for the Lions.

Kennedy wrestlers fall to Prairie, Hempstead

DUBUQUE - Kennedy came out on the short end of a pair of Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling meets Thursday at Dubuque Hempstead.

The Cougars (5-12, 3-10) were beaten by Prairie, 53-22, and Hempstead, 37-25.

Shaun Beyer (152) had a pin against Prairie and won by decision against Hempstead.

Kennedy won five matches against Prairie. Logen Rodriguez had a major decision over Zack Fiser at 113.

Nathan Waterhouse (126) had a fall and Austen Winders (145) a major decision against Hempstead.

Linn-Mar boys bowlers move to 9-0

Dreyson Robe shot games of 241 and 210 for a 451 series that led Linn-Mar past Kennedy, 3084-2921, Thursday afternoon in boys bowling at Cedar Rapids Bowl.

Linn-Mar ran its record to 9-0.

Linn-Mar's Trent Jochimsen shot high game with a 258. The Lions' Colby Frye shot a 247.

Doug Svoboda and Kyle Custer shared series honors for Kennedy at 399. Custer shot the Cougars' high game with a 216.

Lassen, Roth pace Lions by Cougars

Matt Lassen and Jimmy Roth have a lot in common.

Both of them are talented 6-foot-5 seniors, both of them will continue their basketball careers in college next season, and both of them have spent most of their high school careers as complementary role players on highly successful Linn-Mar teams.

Their roles have changed this season, however. Now they have to be leaders as the Lions aim for their 10th straight trip to the Class 4A state tournament.

Kennedy will induct 12 into Hall of Fame

Ten former athletes and two boosters will be inducted into the Kennedy Athletic Hall of Fame this Friday night.

The athletes are Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader, Laurie (Haddy) Hepker, Meghan Sievertsen, Susan (Buckheister) Hanson, Louie Ervin, Chad Hartke, Ben Lamaak, Randy Moore and Nick Morio.

The two boosters are Jayne Kremer and Chuck Patton.

The induction ceremony will be held in the Kennedy cafeteria at 5:15 p.m. Friday. The new Hall of Famers will be introduced to the crowd at approximately 7:30 p.m. between games of a basketball doubleheader against Jefferson.

Hoyer named district coach of year

Cedar Rapids Kennedy baseball coach Bret Hoyer was named the Class 4A Northeast District Coach of the Year by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Saturday night at the IHSBCA banquet in Des Moines.

Hoyer led the Cougars to the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament last July. The Cougars tied for the Mississippi Valley Conference title in 2012.

Hoyer also was recognized at the banquet for winning the 600th game of his high school career last season.

Botkin, Holmes spark Kennedy girls

DECORAH - Stephanie Botkin poured in 21 points and Jordan Holmes added 18 Saturday night as the Kennedy Cougars topped Decorah, 57-41, in a girls basketball game in Decorah.

The victory raised Kennedy's record to 10-7.

Anna Madrigal scored 15 points for Decorah (5-12).

Hendrickson sparks Kennedy girls by Hempstead

DUBUQUE - Paige Hendrickson scored 17 points Friday night as Kennedy clipped Dubuque Hempstead, 44-33, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game in Dubuque.

Madison Meier contributed 11 points for the Cougars (9-7, 6-4).

Ashley Dolan led Hempstead (8-9, 4-7) with 12 points.

Cougars upset by Hempstead, 56-47

Dubuque Hempstead had three players score 14 points apiece and the Mustangs upset Kennedy, 56-47, Friday night in Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball at Kennedy.

Blake Murdock scored 12 points to lead Kennedy (9-5, 6-4). Patrick Martin and Ben Struss added 11 points apiece.

Jake Weber, Josh Dolson and Ty Putchio scored 14 points apiece for Hempstead (3-11, 3-7).

Red-hot Wiedemeier leads Kennedy girls bowlers

WATERLOO - Amanda Wiedemeier was on fire for the Kennedy girls on Friday, rolling games of 234 and 246 for a 480 series that carried the Cougars past Waterloo East, 2734-2545, at Cadillac Lanes.

Wiedemeier helped the Cougars build a 59-pin lead in the first round. Kennedy pulled away in the Baker round.

East's Trisa Elder shot a 264 high game.
