PDF

Jay Borschel and Greg Purnell will be honored Friday night when 12 new members are inducted into the Linn-Mar Athletic Hall of Fame.

Borschel was a four-time state wrestling champion for the Lions and won an NCAA title for the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2010. He compiled a 163-1 record with 95 pins and three undefeated seasons at Linn-Mar and was Iowa's 16th four-time state champion.

Purnell won three state football titles during his 19 years as Linn-Mar's head coach (1985, '89, '90) and compiled a 144-49 record. He was enshrined in the Iowa Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990 and currently is the head coach at St. Francis College Prepatory High School in Wheaton, Ill., where he led the team to the Class 5A state title in 2008.

Jeff Bouslog, Juli (Campbell) Groath, Linda Frisch, Dave Hutchinson, Charlie Kress, Lisa (Lombardo) Dutchik, Bob Nielson, Andy Pantini, Elaine Tatro and Christy (Pickering) Sevening also will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Bouslog twice was named Linn-Mar's Most Valuable Wrestler and excelled in football. He attended Luther College and got his law degree from Iowa.

Groath helped Linn-Mar win the state basketball title in 1985 - the first 5-on-5 girls tournament in state history - and was named captain of the all-tournament team. She was all-state in basketball and also played volleyball.

Frisch was the Linn-Mar girls golf coach for 34 years and also coached basketball and track. Her golf teams won eight conference titles and two state co-ed titles. She was inducted into the Iowa Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 2006.

Hutchinson served as an assistant boys varsity basketball coach for 15 years and also coached football and baseball. He was instrumental in starting the Linn-Mar youth basketball program.

Kress and his wife, Pat, are members of the Linn-Mar Volunteer Wall of Fame. He helped coach gymnastics and youth basketball teams and has been a lifelong supporter of Linn-Mar.

Dutchik was tri-captain of the girls basketball team that won the 1985 state title and was captain of the tennis team. She was named all-state in basketball and was an NAIA All-American in basketball and tennis at St. Ambrose, where she was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Nielson played football, basketball and tennis at Linn-Mar and has been a successful head football coach in college at Ripon, Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Wartburg and Minnesota-Duluth. He's led Minnesota-Duluth to two NCAA Division II national titles and twice has been named the National Coach of the Year.

Pantini participated in football, baseball, basketball and wrestling at Linn-Mar and was a member of the football team that went 10-1 in 1982 and was ranked No.1 at the end of the season. He has been the public address announcer for Linn-Mar football games for 26 years and is the Communications Manager for the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

Tatro just completed her 38th year of helping the Linn-Mar athletic department as a ticket-seller for football, basketball and wrestling events. In all that time, she has never missed an event when she's signed up to work.

Sevening played basketball and volleyball at Linn-Mar and was a member of the state champion girls basketball team in 1985. She received conference honors in both sports.

The Hall of Fame inductees will be honored at Linn-Mar's varsity basketball doubleheader Friday night against Prairie.
