Linn-Mar High School - Marion, Iowa

Linn-Mar wins Wash volleyball title

Youth was served Saturday at the Warrior Volleyball Invitational at Washington High School.

With a number of Metro schools re-stocking their rosters this year with underclassmen, for the most part they acquitted themselves quite well in an 11-team tournament that featured five teams ranked in the top 10 of their class.

Linn-Mar, one of the least experienced of all with just one starting senior, claimed the championship by winning five of its six matches.

Ranked No. 8 in Class 5A, the Lions coasted over Class 3A second-ranked Union, 21-10 and 21-13, in the afternoon final. They also defeated the Knights in three sets in the morning session.

Linn-Mar’s only loss of the day was a 21-13, 21-10 setback to Class 5A powerhouse Johnston in pool play, and that was without the services of 5-foot-11 freshman right side hitter Megan Renner.

Big plays, red zone misses hurt L-M

BETTENDORF - Stopping the big play and scoring in the red zone.

Both areas have been trouble areas through the first two games for the Linn-Mar football team.

And it has proved costly.

The Lions made some big plays on defense, but gave up two long scoring runs in Friday night's game against Pleasant Valley.

And when Linn-Mar had gained momentum and was driving for a potential tying touchdown early in the fourth quarter, it stalled out at the Spartan 2.

The result was a 27-13 win for Pleasant Valley before a good crowd at Spartan Stadium.

No. 5 Cougars spike No. 3 Lions

For awhile Tuesday night, it looked like big Amanda Ollinger was going to personally wreck the Kennedy Cougars in their volleyball showdown with Linn-Mar at the Kennedy gym.

The Cougars kept their cool and battled back for a 17-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-15 victory over the Lions in a battle between two of the top Class 5A volleyball teams in the state.

Linn-Mar is ranked No. 3 and Kennedy is ranked No. 5, but the experienced Cougars were the better club this time.

Ollinger, a 6-foot-1 senior who will play basketball for the Iowa Hawkeyes, collected eight kills in the first set as the Lions got off to a fast start, but she had only 10 more kills the rest of the night.

"We started off a little shaky," Kennedy senior Tianna Drahn acknowledged.
