Saints sweep No. 10 Lions in softball

Erin Drahozal has been playing softball for Xavier with a tender heart this season.

Her mother, Kelly, is undergoing treatments for breast cancer, and Erin appreciates all the support she and her family have received from teammates and opponents alike.

"We held a fundraiser today and when we went to Jefferson a couple of weeks ago they had a fundraising thing," Drahozal said after the Saints swept Linn-Mar at Bob Erusha Field Tuesday night. "And we have pink headbands supporting her."

Drahozal performed well as a pitcher and hitter as Xavier won both games by 8-1 scores, but she's not able to focus entirely on softball even when she's between the lines.

Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar has been honored as the Gatorade Iowa Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year for the second time in her prep career.

Jenks, an outstanding distance runner, also was honored by Gatorade when she was a freshman during the 2012-13 school year. She will be a senior at Linn-Mar this year.

The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and character.

Jenks, 5-foot-5, captured the 800, 1500 and 3000 meter runs at the 2015 Drake Relays and won all three events at the Class 4A state meet, helping Linn-Mar finish second in the team standings.

Jenks has maintained a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has volunteered on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, won the silver medal in the triathlon at the Junior Olympics in China last summer and is a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

IHSAA needs to smile on Metro baseball

This has developed into a special year for high school baseball in the Metro area with Jefferson, Linn-Mar, Prairie and Kennedy all worthy of trips to the Class 4A state tournament next month.

Now it's time for the Iowa High School Athletic Association to give them all a fair chance of making it to Principal Park in Des Moines.

Let's jump to the bottom line: The IHSAA should put Jefferson, Linn-Mar, Prairie and Kennedy in different substate tournaments so none of them would bump heads prior to the state tournament.

That does not mean all four teams would make it to Des Moines, but it means all four would have a clean shot.
