Kuhn tosses 1-hitter for Marion

SOLON - David Kuhn pitched a one-hitter as the Marion Indians bopped Solon, 9-1, in the opening round of the Class 3A district baseball tournament at Solon Friday night.

Kuhn tossed a complete game and struck out eight batters.

Marion raised its record to 24-16 with the convincing victory. The Indians will face Dubuque Wahlert (19-19) in the district finals Monday at 7 p.m. at Solon. The substate finals will be played next Wednesday night at a site to be determined.

Marion scored first against Solon on a single by Maverick Miller and an RBI double by John Carstensen.

Hansen tops all-Metro softball team

Cedar Rapids Jefferson catcher Maddie Hansen has been named the Athlete of the Year on the All-Metro Softball Team, as selected by Metro coaches.

Hansen, a senior, is hitting .504 with 11 home runs and 46 RBIs to rank among the state leaders in all three departments. She plans to play next season at Kirkwood Community College.

Hansen has helped the third-ranked J-Hawks reach the Class 5A state tournament with a 35-7 record. Jefferson will face Linn-Mar in the opening round at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Fort Dodge.

5 Indians make All-Wamac softball

Five members of the Marion High School softball team have been named to the Wamac Conference honor squad for the 2015 campaign.

Alicia Steepleton, Haley Dullea and Sydney Nielsen were named second team all-Wamac. Bailey Fuller and Maddie Knapp received honorable mention.

The Indians reached the Class 4A regional finals this year and finished with a 22-15 record.

   

Marion girls fall in regional final

OSKALOOSA - The Marion softball team's surge through the Class 4A playoffs ended on a disappointing note Tuesday night.

The Indians lost to Pella, 11-1, and fell one game short of reaching the state tournament.

Marion nipped Vinton-Shellsburg, 4-3, in the opening round of the regional tournament. The Indians blanked 15th-ranked Xavier, 1-0, in the regional semifinals before running into Pella.

The Dutch stunned No. 2 Indianola in the semifinals last week and continued their impressive showings by dominating Marion in the regional finals.

Marion ended the season with a 22-15 record. Pella advanced to the state tournament with a 21-13 mark.

 

 

 

 

Donohue tosses shutout for Marion

Brady Donohue pitched a five-hit shutout Monday night as the Marion Indians blanked Independence, 5-0, in the first game of a Wamac Conference doubleheader at the Marion field.

Independence won the nightcap, 3-1.

Bobby Vanderlind had a double, triple and three RBIs for Marion in the first game. John Carstensen and Maverick Miller also had two hits.

Independence scored three runs with two outs in the fifth inning to win the second game. David Kuhn had a triple and two hits for Marion.

The split left Marion with a 23-16 record.
