Marion High School - Marion, Iowa

Marion softball game moved to Oskaloosa

Marion High School's game against Pella in the regional finals of the Class 4A softball tournament has been moved from Indianola to Oskaloosa for travel purposes, the IGHSAU announced Monday.

The game between Marion (22-14) and Pella (20-13) will start at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to the Class 4A state tournament in Fort Dodge.

Both teams enjoyed upset victories in the regional semifinals. Marion topped No. 15 Xavier, 1-0, and Pella stunned No. 2 Indianola, 4-0.

Marion is seeking its second trip to the state tournament in school history. The Indians placed sixth in the Class 2A tournament in 1999.

Marion upsets No.15 Saints in regional

Maybe the Marion Indians were too young to be nervous Saturday night against the 15th-ranked Xavier Saints. Or maybe they simply didn't care how young they are.

The Indians had an eighth grader at shortstop. They had another eighth grader behind the plate. They have only one senior on the team and she bats ninth. Yet they all played like season veterans in the biggest game of the year so far.

The young Indians upset the Saints, 1-0, in the Class 4A regional semifinals at Bob Erusha Field and now are one victory away from reaching the state tournament for only the second time in school history.

Marion advances in 4A regional play

Marissa Whitney had three hits as Marion broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth to down Vinton-Shellsburg, 4-3, in a first-round Class 4A regional softball game at Marion.

Camryn Cannoy led off the fifth with a single and scored when a ball hit by Maddie Knapp was misplayed in left field for an error.

Vinton-Shellsburg had the potential tying run at second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Indians' pitcher Alicia Steepleton retired the final two batters to secure the win.

Fish joins '600 Club' as Marion sweeps

TAMA - Steve Fish lived all over the United States and all over the world when he was growing up as a Navy brat, but he found a home in Iowa and never left after graduating from Coe College in 1983.

Now he's a member of an exclusive club in his adopted state.

Fish won his 600th game as a high school baseball coach Wednesday night when the Marion Indians swept a Wamac Conference doubleheader from South Tama, 7-5 and 11-0 in five innings.

Fish captured No. 600 in the opener and has an overall record of 601-336 in 27 years as a head coach, including 15 years at Marion and 12 years before that at Central City. He became the 36th member of the '600 Club' in Iowa among coaches who have spent all their time at the high school level, according to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association website.

The milestone had extra meaning for Fish because his son Baylor, a sophomore shortstop who has been struggling at the plate this season with a .197 batting average, went 3-for-4 in the 600th victory to celebrate with his father.
